ABC is replaying it Saturday (tomorrow) at 8:00 ET.
mmm
For anyone who missed it, it’s up on Hulu now.
(I tried ABC’s website yesterday, all I saw was clips)
Finally got the opportunity to watch it. I settled in with cautious optimism, and the Norman Lear intro gave me a good feeling.
Alas, I shut it off after around 10 minutes. Just couldn’t stomach it. Carroll O’Connor IS Archie Bunker, always will be.
There was no good reason for this re-boot to ever happen.
mmm
I watched it last night, and that’s kind of how I felt about it. It was hard to see the actors as playing those well known characters, and not as actors impersonating the original actors. Especially Jamie Foxx as George Jefferson – it looked like he had Parkinson’s with all the shaking going on. He really needed to dial it back a bit.
It’s not a reboot and I think they gave good reasons why they did it. Not only was it groundbreaking television, I’m having trouble thinking of a show since managed to address social (especially racial) issues so well and get good ratings.
Eta: though I wish Harrelson and Tomei hadn’t hammed it up quite so much.
I wondered how they decided which episodes to do, and after seeing it, I think they picked episodes that featured as many characters as possible. (Ironically for something they went to so much trouble to do live, I saw it several days later from my DVR.)
And this reminds me of something I wondered back when these shows were new; Sherman Helmsley didn’t appear very often on All In The Family as George Jefferson. Instead, we mostly saw his brother Henry. Is that how you remember it and if so, why?
Oh, and the racism was far more blatant than I remembered (and I’m old enough to have watched the original runs of those shows).
Hensley (note - only one “l”.) was appearing in the Broadway play Purlie at the time Lear offered him the part of George Jefferson, but did not want to break his commitment to the play. Lear was willing to hold the part open for him until he was available. They explained his off screen absence as his not willing to enter a white man’s house.
Hemsley (note - no “N” but one “M”.)
(sorry, couldn’t resist) ![]()
mmm
They gave reasons. I don’t think they were good ones.
mmm
Sean Hayes did a good Frank Lorenzo. Lauren Graham would’ve been good as Irene, if they’d have needed one.
How many Lionels were there?
blackish. Anthony Anderson’s Dre Johnson is the race-flipped version of Archie Bunker; save that he’s written as a little less comic and a little more rounded. Kenyatta Harris has some interesting takes on modern racial issues; and he’s not afraid to mock some of the absurdities of black culture, too.
That’s about how long I lasted as well. I was dismayed to see that they lifted the All In The Family script verbatim from one of the original episodes.
You were “dismayed to see that they lifted the All In The Family script verbatim from one of the original episodes”? That’s exactly what they said they were going to do and it’s what they did.
Edited to add, see the fourth post in this thread.
So what? I can still be dismayed, can’t I? I already saw that episode.
Blame my fat fingers on my phone keyboard. ![]()
There were two Lionels. Three if you count D’Urville Martin in the two unaired pilots. Mike Evans first played Lionel on the series. He continued with the role on the The Jeffersons for its first season. He left to devote more time for writing on Good Times!, which he helped to create. He was replaced by Damon Evans until 1979. He returned to play Lionel as a regular for two more seasons, then intermittently after that.
Umm, the question was how many in the live show? I knew about the multiple Lionels on the originals, hence the whole point of asking.
Anyway, watched the AitF part last night. Skipped over the Jimmy and Norman bits.
It was nice at times, meh at times, and really, really awful at times.
Some comments on the new actors: Marisa Tomei did a thorough job imitating the weird Edith walk and such. But it doesn’t work at all. She was clearly faking it. Ditto a lot of other people’s mannerisms.
Jamie Foxx was a disaster from start to finish. What a mess.
At times Woody was just right. Much better than I expected. But it wasn’t a sustainable bit.
Probably won’t watch the Jeffersons segment.
I got to this thread late but the main reason I now want to see this no one has mentioned.
.
She played my favorite character on either show, Florence. How well do you think she did? I realize it was just a short cameo but it sounds fun watching her reprise that role.
I agree that Foxx and Harrelson over did the ‘homage’ and strayed into parody Still enjoyed it. A little bit of fan service that I would have appreciated is if Jackee first looked at Marla Gibbs and said, “Mary?” in her Jackee way.
