LIVE STRONG and cough: Lance Armstrong bracelets

I work at a fairly large college campus where the yellow LIVE STRONG Lance Armstrong bracelets are everywhere. The irony is getting to me though of seeing this “fight cancer” fundraising bracelet everywhere on wrists connected to hands that are holding a cigarette. It reminds me of the PETA president at one place I worked who was arrested for cruelty to animals for feeding squirrels Cracker Jacks (one choked to death).

Gotta love college students with a cause.

“… arrested for cruelty to animals for feeding squirrels Cracker Jacks (one choked to death).”

Nobody told the squirrel there was a surprise in every box?

I wear a Live Strong bracelet because my father has leukemia as well as some sort of lymphoma that the doctors are having a hard time diagnosing. He’s been going through chemo on and off for over a year, had heart trouble that led to a septuple bypass, and in the next month will undergo a stem cell transplant (here’s some info about that) that may or may not be successful. He bought a bunch of them and handed them out to friends and family as kind of a good luck token. I wear mine every day, and yes, I smoke while wearing it.

This is not meant as a derogatory post against you, Sampiro, I just want to point out that there may be reasons aside from fashion or a pet cause that might make someone wear a bracelet. I do find it strange to see bracelets on seemingly half the population, and seeing blank yellow bracelets for sale at gas stations that have nothing to do with the Lance Armstrong foundation. It’s kind of sad, but I wear my ‘real’ one because it means a lot to me and my Dad.
