Despite this thread teetering on the rails due to a few proud racists, I’d like to share a friend’s statistics (he’s black). In about nine years of living and driving in Washington state, he’s been pulled over 26 times and received only 4 tickets.
He did not have the same problem while living in the L.A. area, but was once detained for nearly an hour for “matching a description.” For that, it was especially an indignity because he saw the guy they eventually arrested. My friend is tall and skinny, the real suspect was short and fat (and wearing wildly different clothes).
But, please, go back to the discussion about how black people aren’t really treated differently but when they are it’s totally justified.

Does your university not have key cards to get in the building? Shit, Iowa State’s Friley Hall (the only dorm big enough for it’s own zip code) had doors that locked at a certain time, except for one that went by a desk that was staffed 24 hours, and this was over 15 years ago. I’d wager Yale has a system at least as robust.

Let me ask you, why do you think this situation exists? Do you feel that black people have some inherent trait that makes them more likely to break the law than white people? Or do you feel that the situation is the effect of black people being more likely to have grown up in an unfavorable environment that encourages crime than white people?
If it’s the former and you believe that black people have something like a “crime gene” (along with a poverty gene, a poor education gene, an illegitimacy gene, and an unemployment gene) that white people don’t have, then you’re a racist.
If it’s the latter and you believe that black people and white people basically start out the same and are products of the environment they grew up in, then explain why we should accept that black people are growing up in a significantly worse environment than white people are? Shouldn’t we be working on improving that environment?
No, ZPG Zealot did not do that. All she’s said is that having someone check id on a person sleeping in the common area is proper security practice. You can find her reasoning outlandish but there’s no need to lie about her stance.

The problem is people will bring their friends or total strangers they think are somebody else’s friends into the dorm. So unless all visitors are banned the residents of the dormitory are at the mercy of each other’s ability to judge who is harmless and who is dangerous. College students are not experts in the this by any means and their mistakes shouldn’t be allowed to ruin other people’s lives. That’s why basic security precautions are necessary anytime large numbers of people live together.
As for the Yale dorm, I’ve been in that dorm. Totally normal for people to fall asleep wherever. Although I don’t believe I ever slept in that one.
Basic security precautions != calling the cops every time someone is doing something you think they shouldn’t be doing
