I rest my case.
Why on earth are you people hammering smartguy on his english skills? He is clearly attempting to cross a cultural bridge which can only help us better understand each other, by posting and reading a board that is not in his mother tongue. His point is what you should be attacking, not his grammar. Smart guy, your initial post isnt in perfect english, but your point is clear. If anything, our “superior english speakers” should have helped you better state your position rather than taking cheap shots.
oh and by the way…yuo dnot evn hvae to selpl tnhigns porprely to aserctian teh mneannig. The mneaning si waht si ipmortnat!
mrrealtime, you probably weren’t referring to my post as hammering, as I tried to be gentle. His point has been addressed by several posters for and against. His language skills will inevitably subject him to ridicule in this forum. He might have a happier time in one of our kinder areas.
Huh? What does this actually say?
Wait, is it a trick? I demand to know how you did it! It is my legal right!
Oh, don’t even go there. In a written medium like this, spelling is just as important as meaning - spelling IS meaning. Just because I was able to decipher this post doesn’t mean I want to have to wade through piles of typos and spelling and grammar errors in every post I try to read.
And yes, you’re right - attacking smartguysmile’s English skills is not fair ball if he is interested in improving them. As they are right now, he is nearly incomprehensible to English speakers. So, howsabout it, smartguy? Are you interested in improving your English writing skills?
If u dont tell how scrt done, u r ass.
This not grammer class. U dont know me, so dont judge me! LOL!!!1!1
What a surprisingly ethocentric statement.
Spelling and grammar indicate nothing more than perhaps the context of the writer, showing perhaps their culture, age, or regional dialect, in other words what makes them unique and interesting.
Before I get accused of hijacking this thread, I should probably start a new one…although I think “hijacking” a thread should be OK, because tangential thinking is natural and positive for intellectual development. Thats probably another thread too.
oops I spelled ethnocentric wrong. In case you thought I meant something else, I certainly wouldn’t want to confuse you.
That’s not ethnocentric at all; I don’t see how you can say that.
Spelling and grammar demonstrate the willingness of the communicator to work at communicating meaning to the communicatees. If the OP truly demonstrates the ability to communicate of the OPer, then I’m astonished that he can even read this message board.
because, laddy, duhpendin on how ah spell things well give ya an ideeah of where ah’m comin frum. (my scottish accent is terrible). The interesting thing is usually people with accents incorporate their accents right into their spelling, word order and type. My guess is smart guy is either eastern european or from the mid east. Would need to see more of his typing to be sure. So, if you feel that this kind of spelling/grammar which represents a particular ethnicity or culture is “Wrong and needs to be eliminated so we are all the same” you are, by definition, ethnocentric, and depending on the extent of your intolerance, essentially racist, IMHO of course.
Why? If you review his posts, he certainly seems to be based in the U.S.
Of course I am an ass. A pompous, pontificating, silly, self-important, vulgar ass. I know that. Bob Loblaw talks out of his ass.
That much said, I’m still not telling anyone here directly.
Spelling. I could care less, unless the mistakes are unintentionally funny. Then I like it.
Bring pie.
Hey, I got another question for you: are all stage magicians insufferable pricks in real life, or just the ones who post to the SDMB? Every time someone posts one of these “How do they do this magic trick?” threads, some pigeon botherer comes out of the woodwork demonstrating a simply amazing ratio of arrogance to actual social utility. Is it the realization that you’re pretty much a glorified party clown that does it? Christ. Turns out Tarzan had a point, after all. You are an ass.
Do we even know for certain that the OP is not a native English speaker?
Where did you get this ridiculous idea? I work with recent immigrants from India, Russia and China, among other places, whose speech varies from lightly accented to nearly incomprehensible. The majority of them write clear and grammatical English. I have never seen writing from one of my co-workers which included any manifestation of their accent.
Whoooooooosh!!!
Only two I know are insufferable pricks, although my buddy Bill may have grown up (not).
As for actual social utility, trust me, I can make people disappear. That gay fake reporter at the White House? Poof! and he’s gone.
That is the funniest line I’ve read in weeks.
Hil-ar-ious.
Thank Bob!
As one who thoroughly enjoys magic acts, whether skillfully done or the stuff my 5 year old does for me, I have to get behind Loblaw on this one. (all the better place to catch your sneaky tricks) The hokey ‘brotherhood of silence’ bit is as much a part of illusionist’s act as long legs on a Rockette. It’s not just standard, it’s an integral part of the schtick, and the whole experience dies a little bit every time a magician tells.
Comparing magician’s illusions to movie fx isn’t really fair, since the objective of the latter is to simulate some sort of reality, while the objective of the former is to mess with it. When someone asks ‘how did they make the bus fly in Speed?’ they want to know the technology behind a scene, the point of which was not to make the audience shout “How’d they DO that?” but rather to help us seamlessly suspend our disbelief on matters of gravity and buses. The magician’s job seems to be just the opposite, as he encourages his audience to actually question the existence of gravity and other physical laws. No one with any kind of sophistication will actually believe that the lady is hovering in mid air, but the very act depends on the audience’s willingness to go along with the illusionist’s ability to levitate her.
Kind of like a Bob Dylan concert. You’ll enjoy yourself more if you pretend he can sing.
