I belong to a skeptic’s group in Norfolk, VA. We were told about an upcoming Science Cafe which I thought might be of interest to Dopers in the area. Here is the email which was forwarded to us:
“Bigfoot and Aliens and Ghosts—Why do we believe in things that just aren’t so?” By Jason W. Hart, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Christopher Newport University.
This edition of Science Cafe focuses on examining the psychological processes that shape and maintain pseudoscientific ways of thinking. Cognitive biases, the misuse of statistical information, and errors in logic are a few of the issues that will be discussed. Dr. Jason W. Hart is a social psychologist with expertise in the areas of motivation, social influence, and group psychology. Presently, Dr. Hart teaches social psychology, tests and measurement, and “Why people believe in weird things: The psychology of pseudoscientific thinking” at Christopher Newport University.
The Science Cafe will be held from 5:30 to ~7:30 on Tuesday, May 20th. We will hold the cafe at Marker 20 at 21 East Queens Way, Hampton, VA.
For more info on the restaurant, please go to their website at http://www.marker20.com/.
Please share this information with your co-workers, friends, students, and neighbors. …
The event is being sponsored by the local chapter Sigma Zi chapter.
I’m definately going to be attending, as it sounds like it would be right up my alley. I know the SDMB has a larger-than-average population of skeptics, so I thought some other Dopers might be interested as well. My skeptic’s group is meeting tomorrow night. If I get any more information I’ll pass it on.
