Local favorites...guilty pleasures

There comes a time when that local band that you eagerly see 5 or 6 times a year begins to fly farther from the nest.

You get teary-eyed when you think of the little wings flapping in the hazardous world outside of that little club where you always had a good seat, but you truly wish them continued success, and maybe…one day…you will hear them on the radio and know that they have emerged from their cocoon of regional success…a musical butterfly…to be eaten alive by the voracious public eye.

You want to give them a big hug…perhaps cling to them pleading that they really could be happy playing to the same crowd, at the same place, forever…begging them to consider your musical needs before the go off and get “discovered”.

Then you find yourself online, biting your lip as emotion wells up in the back of your throat…doing the one thing you can do to help your little buttefly fly…exposing others in the world to their music.

Now you too, can finally end those sweaty, sleepless nights, wracked with guilt because you’ve kept your beloved performer(s) a secret, selfishly hording them for your own pleasure…just take a deep breath and post to the thread…you’ll be alright.

Jennifer Nettles found regional success in the Atlanta area as part of now-defunct * Soul Miner’s Daughter * which hit the scene in 1996. The released 2 independently produced CD’s while the were funct.

Her current delicious, delectable offerings are *The Jennifer Nettles Band * (3 CD’s currently available) and a very fun country collaberation (with Kristen Hall and others) called
Sugarland. I have a short cd that they’ve had at their Atlanta shows, but I do not think they have a distributable CD quite yet, but they are working on it and touring regionally.

Don’t let “country” scare you off if that’s not your thing…[i[The Jennifer Nettles Band[/i[ offers slammin’ rock, rockabilly, southern rock, jazzy rock, bluesy rock…they just plain rock. Just be aware that Jennifer’s talents can’t be neatly packaged into only one genre…thankfully.

If you read the links you’ll see that the fate of *The Jennifer Nettles Band * may be uncertain, but trust me…remember her name…listen to her stuff…keep your eyes open for her participation in anything, and you will not be sorry.

Go get 'em Jennifer…make us proud sniff

I’m still working on my OP skills…this was supposed to be a thread where you can sing the praises of your favorite local best-kept-secret band…not sure if that was clear…

I’ve got two. Friends of my sister, from San Luis Obispo, they are doing very well and could do better: JND A little blues, jazz, soul and I don’t know what else… one of the best sax players I have seen in a long time. They tour; go see them! (And the lead singer is cute! - if about 20 years too young for me :))

Local boy Tommy Castro is straight up blues just like it oughta be. Kicked ass all over the San Francisco Blues Festival, even trading licks with BB King… and he still plays local clubs, or just sits in when he’s in town. There are some MP3s available to sample on the site, but I don’t know how good they are… I already have the CDs

I have two local faves:

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. They always put on a great fun show.

The Town Pants. They tour a lot now, which I guess it’s a good thing. They are a blast! Great pub band.
