The "not quite famous" band appreciation thread

I was in Santa Fe on Friday and I spent most of the night listening to an incredible band called Wild Blooms. I got to thinking that there are countless bands and musicians out there that I will probably never hear of. So, I’d like y’all to post some of your favorite local bands. Here’s a couple more from New Mexico.

The Lush Life

Feels Like Sunday

I’m looking forward to hearing what everyone recommends!

I was going to post these in the the “good local bands” thread but it sunk last week before I could get around to it…

Carlyn Mark - Old school country, with some Wanda Jackson, Patsy Cline, Groucho Marx influences. She also often tours with Neko Case.

The Doers - Minutemen influenced acoustic punk

The Beekeepers - Revolver-era Beatles-type thing.

In fact, if you want a good site with mp3’s and information about lots of smaller Canadian bands from all genres check out New Music Canada

King’s X.

They’re #83 on the VH1 Hard Rock top 100 bands, but are probably the only one on there without at least one big hit. Even Quiet Riot had 2 hits, which you can even sometimes still hear on the radio.

The Four Postmen. Used to be a Palm Springs band, then headed to the big city of LA, where they play at Genghis Cohen’s frequently. They are goofy much of the time, but their musical ability is solid. A good show, and if Matt or Stefan or Ken are reading this, WE MISS YOU. (you too, Geoff and Brett)

Goose Creek Symphony

Six bands who should be God:

The Cynics

Turbonegro

Electric Frankenstein

The Fleshtones

The Dictators

Lazy Cowgirls

Oh shit…I realized right after I hit submit that you said local bands. Sorry.
:smack: My brain’s fried from working so much overtime lately.

I’ll still count The Cynics though, since Pittsburgh is only a short drive away, and I’m there all the time.

I love Carolyn Mark. She and Neko case did a great record a few years ago under the name “Corn Sisters.”

My vote goes for Richard Swift , who makes greally gorgeous, anachronistic tin pan alley-ish pop music with nods to Tom Waits, Cole Porter, and Leonard Cohen.

No problem. I didn’t realize that there was a “good local bands” thread, otherwise I would’ve posted there instead of creating this one.

Looks good so far. I’m at work now, so I can’t really peruse through the links.

Keep 'em coming.

Another good Santa Fe band: The Dolly Ranchers.

I dig the rock-sound of the Clarks, a Pittsburgh local troupe.

I like The Sheila Divine…they’re not really famous, are they?

Wow, you listen to them too? I thought I was the only one…

Here’s a great site for local Orlando bands:

wonders where Flander’s band is??

The Good Rats, a NYC-area bar band, released several albums over the past 30 years; my favorite is “Tasty.” It’s a crime that these guys aren’t more famous.

The Breakfast Club is a great cover band based primarily in the southeast. I’m not sure whether they play any original music, but they play a heck of a club show.
