Ok, here’s a chance to show off a little pride (or something) for your city/state/province/country/planet…
State: Arizona
don’t leave without seeing: the Grand Canyon, Tombstone, Oak Creek Canyon
bring back for your friends: cactus candy, prickly pear jelly, western wear, jackalope postcards
what’s special about Arizona: the saguaro cactus is native to Arizona
something not so great my state did: the governor repealed Martin Luther King, Jr. day as a paid state holiday. U2 and the Superbowl refuse to come to Arizona. Later on, the next governor reinstated the holiday.
State: Ohio (with an emphasis on South-Western Ohio)
don’t leave without seeing:
1.The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
2. Unites States Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Airforce Base near Dayton
3. The beautiful Ohio River
4. The Cincinnati Museum Center A.K.A. The Hall of Justice (See this link: http://www.cincymuseum.org )
5. Sunwatch Indian Village / Archaeological Park (Near Dayton)
**bring back for your friends: **
Typically people say you ‘must have’ Cincinnati Style Chili (Gold Star or Skyline). You can get this in a can or frozen. This is either a love it or hate it kind of thing. Usually if you are from the area you are more likely to like it (having grown up with it).
Graeter’s Ice Cream. This is another traditional must have. More people will tend to like this (as oppossed to the Chili). I beleive most Graeter’s will ship pints for you.
MANITOBA, CANADA: Don’t leave without seeing snow, oh sorry. But seriously:
l) Grand Beach - we have one of the best beaches anywhere, miles of clean white sand, and clean water. This is one place to really do major babe watching.
We have a two week long event called Folklorama, and in different halls, churches, schools in Winnipeg, sites are set up representing different countries. At these pavillions, they serve food, drink, and dress to represent each country. They present entertainment, and stamp your “passport” showing you have visited. There are always lineups at each site.
3)In February we have a celebration in a section of Winnipeg called St. Boniface known as Festival du Voyageur, famous for French food, entertainment, ice sculptures, drinking, and different events. Lots of fun.
I am from AZ and if I ever see this stuff I hide from it. I am sick of it but would never leave this place. It has a great atmosphere to it and, of course, I could never leave Mill Ave. Just Kidding.
U2 is finally coming. Yay! Now I only wish I had gotten tickets.
Don’t leave without seeing: the Old Man of Hoy (ultra-dramatic sea-rock formation), Maes Howe (Stone age burial mound with Viking grafitti inside), Scara Brae (5000 year old village in great condition), the Gloup!, the Italian Chapel (a fantasticly converted Nissen shed, that wouldn’t look out of place as part of St Peters in Rome), the many second world war shipwrecks that lie like skeletons sticking out of the sea next to the Churchill Barriers. the Ba’ (a rugby-like game in which almost the entire adult population of Orkney takes part)… I could go on.
Bring back for your friends: a bottle of Highland Park single malt whisky!
What’s special about Orkney: Everything.
Something not so great about Orkney: The Brig o’ Waithe has the dubious distinction of being the place where a stray bomb caused the first civilian death of the Second World War.
