Logical fallacies

Can someone give me a listing of some of these fallacies and their meanings? I am talking about things like straw man and also about things like ad hominem attacks.

I guess I am looking for an intro to argumentative philosophy.

P.S. I already know the two examples I gave.

I needed a similar introduction recently for some of my students. If I recall correctly, I just went to a search engine and typed “logical fallacies.” A great number of options came up, some of which were pretty good.

Some books to try.

Straight and Crooked Thinking by Robert Thouless.
Thinking Straight by Anthony Flew.
Language, Truth and Logic by A.J. Ayer.
Informal Logic by Douglas Walton.

Why try google when you’ve got Vivisimo.

Hope it helps.

Thanks a lot, that’s great.

Excellent book; I picked up a copy for 20 pence in a charity shop; reading it was a thought-provoking and challenging experience.

Carl Sagan’s “The Demon-Haunted World” is another good book.

The chapter - “The Fine Art of Baloney Detection” would be relevent.

Another great book on the subject:

Logic and Contemporary Rhetoric: The Use of Reason in Everyday Life by Howard Kahane and Nancy Cavender

Another good website:
