I’ll have to change my answer to rarely to never. Cuz they’re just not very fun in just text. I mean… ;)? It’s just missing the fun factor somehow. No I resort to word and expressions I’m more likely to use IRL, like ARRRGGGGGHH.
(ps, I use the big smilie here where I would, IRL, be laughing or smiling a huge smile, in fact, I have to try and curb my big smilie use and of course I often fail).

People have learned not to write like eight-year-old girls at slumber parties to me. If they e me “LOL” (or, worse yet, the even lazier lower-case “lol”) or use “u” rather than “you,” I will stop communicating with them, and find some adults to chat with.

I always text and type in complete, adult sentence. Often plus smileys. Why can’t it be both? =)
