London and Dublin Dopers, I Need Your Help!

USA today is available at Eason’s on O’Connell from midday. Its same day print and sale.

Remember your hotel will most likely carry either CNN or NBC

Hotels sometines carry CNN or CNBC, but don’t rely on it. In Ireland, you have no hope of seeing a Baseball game, so i suspect an internet cafe is your best bet.

But this is your holidays do you REALLY need to find out the score???

That’s true, Coldie. I don’t usually mind ‘Americanisation’ but this particular book had it’s heart and soul in west London so I couldn’t quite bring myself to see the film version.

I’m sure I will someday, just not ready for it yet.

Was it? I had a vague recollection that the shop was in/near Holloway Road. That would make it N7 at a guess. It was a long time ago that I read it though.

I think it was near the Holloway Road, as well. IIRC, the protagonist lived in Finsbury Park (near Nick Hornby’s IRL home in Highbury).

I was at first going to be caustically sarcastic in response here, but then considered that you mean well. Try this: if you were on vacation in the States during the football championships, and Manchester United was playing, wouldn’t you want to find out the scores? Add that the Sox haven’t been in the playoffs since 1993, haven’t won a pennant since 1959, and haven’t won a World Series since 1917, and you can see why I want to know the scores.

You’re right Tom. I remember frequent references in the book to the Seven Sisters Road. (That’s where I lived in London, so that’s why I remember it!)

The Irish Teletext does not have baseball results as I discovered to my great displeasure - though considering I’m an Orioles fan it’s probably just as well …

“My shop is called Championship Vinyl……………We’re in a quiet street in Holloway…”

elsewhere…

“Just up the Seven Sisters Road”
Can I blame it on false memory syndrome ? ok, plain stupidity then.

JosephFinn - you do know that it is a book dont you? I find it annoying that they moved it to chicago. I live
in notting hill. (yep it(Notting Hill) was filmed in a street near me.
Android, youre right about the BBC micro thing - I never noticed that before.
London calling - its the other way around - cefax on BBC1 + 2 and teletext on the others. They are likely to be dissapointed if you tell them its like the internet.
You can actually find those record shops in London if you look hard enough. There’s a shop that sells them near Victoria street (thats near Big Ben and the Abbey [do you know vincent square?]) they only cost about 10p.

There’s a record store just like the one in HF on Notting Hill Gate, too. Just around the corner from where my GF lives. But then, I’m a digital man - nostalgia is for wimps

Nuke, where do you live in Notting Hill? My GF lives in Linden Gardens, one of those cul-de-sacs on Notting Hill Gate.

Oh, London Dopers? I will be in town the weekend of 7 and 8 October. I very likely may have some time to myself during the days, as my GF works insane hours. Maybe a good idea to hook up?

I’ll do something MPSIMS-ish next week, no doubt.

What a total hijack! I do apologise to Joseph.

I love those cul-de-sacs. Thats the great thing about London, its so disordered. New york is so boring - its all right angles and all the streets have numbers for gods sake. Americans are so unoriginal. Even the name of the city is boring NEW York.

Agreed, Nuke. They should have stuck with the original name, “Nieuw Amsterdam”

Of course I knew. It’s a wonderful novel, but it translated well to Chicago, especially since John Cusak, the lead and one of the screenwriters, knows the area intimately and was able to make the transition work.

Oh, and Nick Hornsby was quoted at the time the movie came out as saying that he approved of the location change. He thought out Wicker Park and Lakeview were a good analogy for Notting Hill. From my knowledge of the novel and my personal knowledge of Wicker Park and Lakeview (I live in Lakeview), I think that it worked quite well.
