London Bomb Plotters- How serious were they?

Having read your links and Googled some more, I now know that you need Hydrogen Peroxide at ten times its available strength; that the mixture is extremely unstable and must be kept below 50F; that it takes hours to dry and become an explosive, and that to make an amount to do serious damage to an aircraft would take a large bulk of ingredients plus fairly bulky equipment for mixing and coolin.

You know, I think that you would do better by smuggling gasoline on board and igniting that in the cockpit.

I call this HMTD on Planes hypothesis as the BS it is and call for one well referenced cite that doing this in an aircraft restroom is in any way likely to be done with any success.

Cite away.

Note, I still think that the alleged plotters are probably misguided fantasists, but do not believe that the UK Government’s response was in proportion to the threat, but that it was used as a teaching exercise to encourage the British Public to trust Tony Blair on terrorism- much as the Heathrow surface to air missile hoax was later suggested to be.

Neither is driving an explosive laden truck into the basement of the WTC. Are you saying it can’t be done with a little Internet training? I’m pretty sure terrorists are computer literate.

And you think someone who WANTS to die is afraid of the risk involved? I don’t.

Well, you have people conspiring together to commit an act of terrorism. You have them taking overt acts to accomplish the ends of their conspiracy. You have them with the intent to commit these acts. It seems to me that it’s a pretty clear case of conspiracy, at least on the part of some of the members. It doesn’t much matter whether they were 2 days, 2 months, or even 2 years away from consumating their acts, I’m glad they were caught, and that they will be prosecuted.

Now, you can argue that the reaction to this conspiracy (cancelling flights, no liquids on airlines, etc.) was an overreaction. I don’t think so myself, but, really, what harm was done outside of more inconvenience for travelers? If you have a problem with people being more scared about terrorist attacks, why not blame the people who were planning the attacks and not the police or government? Did I miss your condemnation of these people?

No…I think not. I don’t feel comfortable posting those kinds of links here. YOU may think its a big joke, but I take it a bit more seriously. Granted, the info is there for anyone who can google…but I’M not going to post it.

Pjen, IANAL but I suggest you be very careful as to what you say. Americans can get away with it because they’re not subject to British law; you are.

This thread suffers from the same malady that the Jon Benet thread did. The evidence is not in and great questions remain. When the case gets argued with and weakened ,I begin to doubt. NYT article said the batteries were hollowed out. Why?
lLts not talk like we know anything yet. We do not.

Pjen’s source says: While officials and experts familiar with the case say the investigation points to a serious and determined group of plotters…

Do you read your own cites? :dubious:

And what percent is that exactly?

Can’t be sure. It used to be readily available in 3%…Now I find almost all 1%.

Oh for crying out loud. You can order 35% Hydrogen Peroxide on The Internet at least in the US.

Personally, I think that the authorities should have waited until after the attack was carried out to arrest the suspects. Right?

I get the cinematic reference and I see the smiley.

I would still advise you to refrain from using personal insults in this Forum. Not everyone is going to get the reference and we have long held that a smiley is no defense against a charge of insulting another poster.

Why did they have to make it on the plane? Why not before they got on the plane?

I was trying to be nice and give gonzomax a chance to research it a little more. The sale of 35% solution was the first thing that Googled up.

then why were they trying to purify it?

When did I say that? True no crime has been committed. I just think a benefit of doubt is in order. You want to judge them. . I want to wait for info and a trial. As the trial goes on or if it is dropped ,much will be learned. I just do not believe everything authorities release.

Just guessing but if they’re using it as an oxidizer then it’s to get more bang for the buck. I have no plans on Googling the subject.

That’s some nice hyperbole you’ve got going there. Really, very impressive.

But seriously, now…“totally destroying millions of people’s lives”?

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that the bozos that were captured in London were about twenty times more competent and prepared than they actually were. Let’s assume they had plane tickets, passports, all the bomb-making materials, and the chemical expertise to prepare the explosives they were accused of wanting to make. Let’s further assume that three different intelligence agencies weren’t watching them like hawks. Finally let’s make the preposterous assumption that their fellow passengers are such sheep that they do nothing in response to what would be fairly obvious signs of people making explosives in the airplane lavatories (“What’s that smell? Damn, what did that guy eat?”)

In this hypothetical fantasy land, they could have perpetrated a 9/11-level loss of life and seriously crippled the airline industry. And “total destroying millions of people’s lives” would still be a hyperbolic overstatement. We’re not at war with freakin’ Satan.

When the Oklahoma Bldg blew up who did we go to war against. When anthrax was in Washington we went to war against who. When poisons were found in aspirin bottles ,what war followed. Terriorism is not an act of war. Who are you going to war with ,if the Englishmen are found guily?. It is an act of aggression perpetrated by a weaker person or group. The war analogy is wrong .
Sorry it is a crime. Sometimes a small crime.Sometimes large. The guilty are punished by the law not the military.

The airline industry is already crippled. United, Northwest, Delta and US Airways are in bankruptcy. There is a high probability that one of them will not survive. Another major attack using aircraft will severely cripple the entire industry along with secondary and tertiary industries. I’m not sure “destroy” is the applicable word but millions of people will lose their jobs

There is an underlying thought that terrorism is purely an act of murder. Great damage can be done financially as part of the attack. 9/11 cost the terrorist nothing in terms of money and did a half-trillion dollar damage to the economy. We are living in times that dictate caution. A person running past a security point or a suspicious box can cost $100,000/hr damage at a major airport.

There is nothing to suggest the Oklahoma bombing was an international act of war. The anthrax case has not been solved and may indeed turn out to be an act of war.

There is an ongoing network of Islamic terrorists who are causing havoc worldwide. They are sponsored by governments such as Iran. State sponsored terrorism is an act of war. If the actions of the “Brits” are directed by another government that is an act of war. If not, then it’s a crime. Regardless, it’s still terrorism if it’s a senseless act designed to inspire terror.
