I went to this old London pub years ago…I was attracted to it because of the age of the building… I believe it dates abck abouy 400 years or so. Anyway, is it a good place to have a meal?Or is it just a tourist trap?
Anyway, I remember having a pint of bitter there…that was OK…is the food any good?
I’m not a London Doper, but I’ve been there twice in the past five years or so. The impression I get is that while it might be kinda touristy, the food is good. We have a good friend who lives in the London area and knows all the really good, old, tucked-away-down-an-alley pubs and he’s the one who’s taken us there. I thought the food was really good - very “stereotypically British” but very, very good. I enjoyed the meal both times. It IS a very old pub and the atmosphere is really neat too.
It’s the one on Fleet Street, right?
Yes its on fleet street. Its about 5mins away from where i’m sitting right now.
Its a bit of a tourist trap (not just foreign tourists, but also visitors to London).
That’s not to say that its not a pretty decent boozer, but you’ll get better food cheaper in other places and it really lacks atmosphere.
If the building itself (and the beer) was what initially attracted you, then i strongly recommend you go to the Princess Louise 10 minutes up the road on High Holborn - same brewery, amazing building (its one of the few remaining 19th century Gin-Joints with an original interior) and very good atmosphere. It’s also dirt cheap.
I can normally be found drinking there a couple of times a week (as can paulberserker whenever i can drag him away from the Ship on Wardour Street) and it has hosted a few dopefests.
It’s fine and the food is perfectly edible - if a bit on the pricey side. It is touristy but its popular for a reason. Also as it’s a Sam Smith’s pub the beer is cheap, and good.
Gee, I liked the atmosphere at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese better than at the Princess Louise - though I really liked that place too (it’s my Mom’s name so we’ve been there two or three times too - every time we go to London). I’ve only eaten a pub lunch at the Princess Louise so I don’t know about the food.
But then, I’m an American anyway, so what do I know?
Could someone please take some photos of the men’s room at Princess Louise??!?!?!
My husband and I tried to go to the Princess Louise when we were in London specifically because our pub guide said it had an amazing men’s room. Unfortunately for us the pub was closed for a private party both times we tried to visit (too close to Christmas, I suppose).
Anyway, is anyone game to get a couple of photos of the men’s room (asking permission from any occupants if you feel that’s necessary ) or at least explain to me what’s so great about the room?
I’ll recommend the pie room at the Newman Arms. It’s sort of west of the British Museum and kind of south of Fitzroy Square. Most accurately and least helpful, it’s exactly halfway between my old office and the hotel I’d stay in. If someone told me that I could only have those pies and no other food for the rest of my life, I’d be just fine with it.
I’m meeting my brother in there for drinks tomorrow night so i’ll try and take some shots for you.
They’re famous because of the age of the fixtures rather than their cleanliness
the prinny lou is actually a grade 2 listed building, but the bogs have a SEPERATE grade 2 listing as well because they are that unique.
And the smell is seperately listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. (And some of the barmaids have a grade two listing.)
I should be very , very careful toting a camera in the men’s toilet . You could be giving the wrong impression.
Whoo hoo! I’ll finally get to see the men’s room at the Princess Louise!
Be careful & all that. If anyone looks askance, tell 'em it’s for a crazy Yank.
Unless a yank can also mean a euphemism for masturbation.
In which case proceed with caution and refer to me in some other way that doesn’t mean male self-abuse.
Ugh - the pitfalls of our Englishes!
I’ll have you know that i’ve had some very… um… “personal” moments with one of those prinny lou barmaids before, and she was very much grade 10 out of 10.
And yes, i’ll be careful with the camera. Got a couple of shots for you tonight, and i’ll try and get a few more tomorrow. Be warned though, that i am only taking them when the bogs are empty, and they’ll only come courtesy of my camera phone (so don’t expect too much in the way of quality!).
FanTAStic!!!
And in exchange, please accept this picture of my bathroom. Plus 1.15 cats.
