Londopers: I'm coming to your town

Me, my friend Joel, and his son and nephew are taking a trip to London from March 31-April 8.

This is the itenerary.

We’re going to do the usual touristy things, but I’d like to know from a native’s perspective which are really the cool spots to go to. I myself want to go on a pub crawl. I’d also like to meet up with any of you folks if possible.

Also, any advice on how not to act like an Ugly American would be appreciated.

Not a London native by any stretch of the imagination (and the Londopers will attest to this!!), but the Weather Project at the Tate Modern is amazing.

Oh, and as for meeting up with the Londopers - starting a thread in MPSIMS will get some form of piss-up organised very very quickly.

The Weather Project is quite wonderful, but unfortunately ends on March 21st. Otherwise, Tate Modern is now slightly the perfect example of coolness c. summer 2000. But don’t let that put you off.

Highgate Cemetry is timelessly cool, especially the Western half. The Eastern side is more popular, mainly on account of Karl Marx’s grave, but the tours of the Western Cemetry take you round the bit that’s the perfect romantically overgrown wooded Victorian graveyard. Numbers are limited, though in March there should be no problem just turning up at the gate and catching the next tour.

Something someone always (rightly) winds up recommending in such threads is the John Soane Museum - a great classical architect’s completely bonkers house and collection. Again, not exactly contemporary, but something most tourists have no idea exists.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Come meet my mate paulberserker

Seriously though - the sooner you let us know when you are here and we organise a date, the more of the “crew” will come out. As Wendell Wagner and Eva Luna can hopefully vouch, we are a pretty friendly bunch.

I’d suggest posting in MPSIMS relatively soonish (thats where we all tend to hang out) and we’ll get something sorted.

Heh, if I get to drinking with paulbeserker, I might not make the plane home…

I’ll go to MPSIMS with this. See you all there.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Why sell yourselves short? If you’d been any friendlier, I might not have remained even as precariously vertical as I did!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Me and my friends like to hike, and I’ve heard that Cornwall has some great trails, through farmlands and such, and pubs in the small towns and villages along the way. Any more details on that?

Plus, from what I hear, natives are kind of jaded with Stonehenge, and just consider it a bunch of rocks. Supposedly, there’s other stone circles that aren’t fenced off from the public. Any recommendations?
