Lone Justice "Ways To Be Wicked" (1985)

Yes, I’m drinking and cruising YT for music I liked back in the day.

Any other Lone Justice recommendations or remembrances?

Ways To Be Wicked

1985 concert

Maria McKee’s self-titled debut album from 1989 was a long-time favourite CD. Reminding me to dig it out and put back into play in the car.

Talk about someone who was expected to make it. What a voice. Shelter was a favorite of mine.

I’m about done for tonight but I will check that out tomorrow.

Not really similar but have you listened to Suzanne Vega’s debut album?

I have no words.

I saw L.J. perform this on the channel 4 show The Tube I think…

Note to self. Transfer the VHS stuff while you can.

I always liked Lone Justice and Maria McKee (in fact, I’ve had a permanent crush on her that is almost as strong as my crush on Susanna Hoffs :)). Another great song of theirs: I Found Love.. It’s a pity that the industry didn’t know how to market an act like that in the mid-eighties and so they fell off the grid. Everybody interested should also check out her solo album You Gotta Sin To Get Saved. It’s a classic of alt-country.

ETA: ninjad by hours. Didn’t check out Small Clanger’s link.

Her half-brother Bryan MacLean (Love) got a the talent gene in the family.

Saw Lone Justice open for U2 30 years ago. Screeching isn’t singing.

Now come on, that’s a bit unfair. I concede that maybe she overdid it a bit in her earlier career, but nobody can deny that she can really sing.

ETA: for proof, her singing a classic: I Can’t Make It Alone.

Screeching?

I know - you should have left after Lone Justice played!

Just listened to her earlier today in my workshop. I had “Has He Got A Friend (For Me)” on a playlist. Nice song - just her voice and playing piano - but it is a sad song the way she sings it.

I always liked the “B” side of “Shelter” from the 45 (which I have somewhere) that is called “Belfry”.

I think I first heard her with Lone Justice on an appearance on SNL.

I was thinking that was a little earlier than 1985 so I checked Wikipedia. You were right. Wished I hadn’t though… she doesn’t look like those album photos I fondly recall anymore.

I liked the first Lone Justice lp when it came out but pretty much forgot about her after that.
Until (I just checked) 9 years ago she played a small venue in town that I went along to and she was great! Bought a couple of her cds at the gig and they still get played from time to time.
Most of the rest of the audience seemed to be long time fans of hers…

I saw LJ playing in a Providence, RI club in late 86/early 87. McKee was stoned out of her mind - it was a shit show. I thought for sure she’d be dead within a year, glad she pulled out of it.
