Did anyone else watch it? I’m guessing not many, since it got pretty low ratings. But after reading the pretty great review at the AV Club, I recorded the first episode and just watched it, and liked it. The main guy was good and believable as a con man growing a conscience. David Keith was good as the con man dad. Jon Voight was very Jon Voighty.
I don’t have much to say about it, other than I enjoyed it and if anyone else was wondering about it, it’s a show I would recommend checking out. It was definitely better than The Event, which I also recorded and watched, although The Event might improve.
I concur with the OP’s observations and preference for this one over The Event in the time slot. Voight’s other recent roles have had him as a gruffer and colder type. I like this Voight better, even with his threats. I expect to see a lot of balancing act moves with the various households and relationships, but it looks possible to do without too much schlock. I’m willing to see a few episodes to allow these writers some room to expand.
I watched it last night online. I dunno. I didn’t hate it. I thought the use of music was effective, for example, and most of the characters worked pretty well, but I hated the dad character and I guess it all felt rather tired to me. I can’t even explain why.
Seriously. I was kind of excited when I thought this was a series take on the movie. The billboards all played up the “Two Worlds” thing and since one of the women was blonde and the other dark haired I just assumed.
Maybe the story would be that the sheriff is still married but carrying on the relationship with the woman who ultimately is revealed to be his half-sister.
