While i’m certain there are a bunch of gay sports players, including baseballers, that we don’t know about, i would hold off on calling any individual gay unless you know what you’re talking about.
Piazza maintains that he is straight, and in the absence of solid evidence to the contrary i think he should be believed.
Not that it would matter to me either way what his sexual preference is. And, as long as he does his job, it shouldn’t matter to anyone else either. But unsubstantiated assertions do no-one any good.
It seems reasonable to me to assume that someone who is philosophically opposed to the very concept of evolution really can’t help manifesting atavism. Doesn’t it?
That was a joke that baseball followers were supposed to get - I was poking fun at Mike Piazza for vehemently declaring his extreme straightness, and Billy Beane has come out as a gay man since he finished playing. I don’t give one tiny little rat’s hiney whether ball players are gay or straight (well, more accurately, I don’t care if anyone is gay or straight, except my husband). As for doing no one any good, it gave my husband an huge laugh to read my post, and that’s always a good thing.
I also failed to note your location. I don’t think i’ve ever yet met a serious person from Calgary.
Oh, one exception: 1994 NHL playoffs, when the mighty Vancouver Canucks came from 3-1 down to beat the Flames in the second overtime period of game 7. There were plenty of long faces in Calgary that night.
Of course, Vancouver residents took the Stanley Cup loss later that season much better, restricting themselves to rioting in the streets.
