This thread will probably only make sense to Canadians. The Friendly Giant died today. Sigh That show was a big part of my youth. I feel sad knowing the man who created Rusty and Jerome has died. Dammit, I miss that show and I guess I miss my lost youth as well. You start to feel old when the idols of your youth die.

P.S. Did you realize that Mr Dressup and the Friendly Giant were both Americans.
I imagine this was a kids show. And the fact that there was a Canadian kids show with a character named “Mr. Dressup” TOTALLY explains The Kids in the Hall.
Oh no!

The Friendly Giant was always one of those shows I hated but felt a need to watch anyway.
All the same, he and his recorder will be missed.
Bob Homme was part of the Canadian psyche as television’s Friendly Giant.
We’ll miss ya Bob.
I grew up in Detroit, and watched them both on Channel 9. Bummer.
And a rocking chair to curl up in… That was one of my favourite shows. He was definitely one of the pioneers of Canadian Children’s TV.
No no, CanadianSue, it was a rocking chair for two to curl up in.
I always wanted one of those…
I read the news in the paper this morning. I grew up watching that show. I always thought his castle would be a cool place to live. It’s a sad day…
You are so right saucy. They just played his theme song on the radio… wow that brings back memories.
I only vaguely remember the content of the show itself, but I used to have the opening and closing memorised.
And “Early One Morning” has always been one of my favourite tunes.
I used to have a little rocking chair like those. I wonder what happened to it?
I guess I’m probably about as young as it gets for those for whom this program was a staple of childhood.
Right after The Green Double-Decker, right before MR. Dressup…
Heck…
I can’t hear recorder music and not think of the Friendly Giant.

Reviving a zombie for Canucks who remember The Friendly Giant, as the CBC posted this interview today: http://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/1982-friendly-giant-bob-homme-steps-out-of-costume
And it’s “a bigger chair for two more to curl up in and for someone who likes to rock a rocking chair in the middle.”
