Looking at adopting another dog- but there's an issue- penile prolapse.[edited title]

Thank you bobkitty, that is helpful. I suspected that that would be the case, interms of maintenance. My wife is kinda turned off by the idea of the PP, but she does think that he is adorable, and has already said that if he gets along with Maggie (or more accurately, she gets along with him) that we’ll probably take him.

Sigmagirl, our vet graduated from OSU and one of the vets in the practice is faculty, and based on my conversation with them yesterday, the PP isn’t that big of a deal. Our biggest concern is getting the dog and then having to spend a lot of money to do a surgery. She said that if, after 2 months, the shelter hasn’t had to do anything in terms of maintenance and that there hasn’t been an issue with it, that it is unlikely to ever need surgery, which is an ‘exceedingly rare’ necessity.

We’ll meet with JB again on Sunday, introducing him to our dogs. If all goes well, I am pretty sure he will be coming home with us that afternoon!

Yes, I am a little excited. What can I say, I’m a big softy. But I come by it honestly, so is my Dad!

Anecdotaly, my little rocket sticks out about 1/2 inch all the time, on occasion up to a full inch. It’s never been a problem for me. Except that one time with the zipper…

Well, I have a suggestion, in terms of PP maintenance. In general, it sounds like it’s not going to be a big deal, but when you’re concerned about protecting his little lipstick, try belly bands. Seems like that might help protect the dog’s little weenie from whatever dog weenies need to be protected from. (I dunno, but there has to be some good reasons there’s a sheath.)

Dogzilla, That’s brilliant! “Belly Bands” may be just what we need!!! Thank you so much for the suggestion!!!

Even better, it’ll make him even cuter! One of my dogs has a marking issue which we’re trying to fix with diapers and he’s so dang adorable with them on! I’m going to look at the Belly Bands as well because they look like a smoother fit than the ones we use now. Thanks Dogzilla!

I checked the manufacturer’s website (bellybands.net). The prices there are way lower than the prices at Petco’s site.

Congodwarf, thanks for the link- I am thinking that that is the route to go.

We’re gonna introduce him to our dogs tomorrow, hopefully: we were originally going to do it on sunday, but our schedule opened up, and we think that having us be home for two days would help ease the transition, so we contacted the shelter to see if that’d be OK.

My wife and I also went out for V-Day yesterday (I work 'til 8pm… gotta love night classes!) and we went shopping. At the pet store. Jingle now has a sweater, a light coat, a puffer vest, a blanket, a chew toy, a new collar, a new leash, and a soft stuffed animal. Yeah, we’re kinda excited- my wife is now far more comfortable with the PP now that we’ve found the belly-bands. Thanks to everyone who told us about them, and to bobkitty for sharing his own experience with the “problem.”

I’ll start a new thread, with pictures of all the puppies, if they all get along and we take him home!

I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see him!

Scraps of fabric + velcro + sewing skills = might be even cheaper to make them at home.

Then you can match the belly band to his jacket or leash or whatever. Dogs’ outfits should coordinate.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You’re funny. Sewing skills! What’ll you think up next?!

:D:D

I made a dog coat once for my BF’s dog.

Sometimes, people can sew. Thought I’d throw it out there in case nobody else thought of it.

Yeah, we’re thinking that sewing our own may be the route to go, my wife is sewing a coat for Maggie this weekend. I’d like to see how it’s constructed before we try to make one of our own!
