Looking at Cheques

For the non 'Mercans…

Even after umpteen years on this board and reading American spelling in general, one of the “mispellings” that still catches my attention the most and irratuionally bugs the everloving shit out of me is check / cheque.

Most of the others I couldn’t give two figs, but this one is just purely wrong.

That’s all

God Help You if you text us.

The misspelling that bugs me is “irratuionally.” Cheque your work.

“Misspellings,” too.

It is not a “misspelling”. It is a valid American spelling. Same with “civilization”, “fraternization” and various other “…zations”. Or “color”. Or “theater”. Or “practice”. Or “program”. And hundreds if not thousands other examples.

Gaudere’s Law:

Any post made to point out a spelling or grammar error will invariably contain a spelling or grammar error.

Close enough to apply.

Yeah, and what’s up with the way the French say ‘Paris’. Different from the whole rest of the world!

Seriously, no - its not wrong, neither is it a misspelling (and neither os it a GQ). Fail.

If this was aimed at me, I was referring to the OP.

And neither is it a GQ either

For me, it’s “math”.

I don;t mich care how Canadians/Brits spell “cheque” – so long as they don’t call the 200-yeaqr-old American spelling a misspelling. (Notice that the OP misspells it as ‘mispelling’ – which I presumnme is to pell in an erroneoua manner,

But if you want me to start writing it ‘cheque’, I’ll need a handwritten request from the Duque of Cambridge.

Since this is GQ, not The Pit or MPSIMS, I’ll answer that Polerius has a GreaseMonkey solution for you for this and any other “mispellings”.

It wasn’t - so was I.

My Gaudere Meter just melted.

Whenever I see it spelled “cheque” I always mentally pronounce it “che-kwee.”

Spellings like “cheque,” “colour,” and “centre” aren’t really English anyway; they’re French. I’m an American, not a Frenchman, dammit!

  1. Of course you’re correct about how different countries spell (and pronounce) words.

  2. Um, I like your wit - but doesn’t your example equate to the Duck of Cambridge?
May I suggest instead that you need a handwritten request from Lord Muque? (Lord Muck)

Or the Marckis.

You guys are craqueing me up!

What do you have against the Duck of Cambridge?

Given that there’s no question in the OP, let’s move this over to IMHO.
