I’m looking for a safari roof rack (for a 1993 Mitsubishi Montero) that will clip directly onto the rain gutters - as opposed to attaching to another roof rack already on the vehicle. I’m wanting the one that is in this picture, (on a Landcruiser.)
I’ve never seen a safari rack like this one - the others I’ve looked at require a factory roof rack or aftermarket roof bars already installed before it can be attached. It would be great to skip over the $200 for that and just have the basket-style safari rack installed directly. Of the few 4x4 dopers here, is there anyone who knows where such a thing can be found?
I have a Yakima system for my Cherokee. Specifically, the LoadWarrior with the extension. These will mount directly to your existing roof rack, or you can use the ‘tower and bars’ system.
I know you’d like to avoid the bars, but I can tell you from experience they’re very handy. For example, a roof rack does cause some drag. I do a lot of freeway driving, and high speeds plus long distances plus drag is not efficient. With the tower-and-bar system you can remove the rack when you don’t need it. The LoadWarrior, like any basket, can me used to carry long or flat items on top of it. But it can be removed to use the full width of the bars for carrying such things. I’ve carried two sit-inside kayaks on top of the basket, but I’ve found it’s easier to carry them right on the bars. Or you can move the basket to one side for cargo, and mount another accessory on the other side to carry your kayak/skis/snowboard/bicycle/etc.
I like the versatility of being able to remove the basket and/or bars when they are not needed, or to set them up for a particular need. And it looks good, too. (The bonus was that it was ‘free’. I got the system with my REI dividend.)
