Looking for a book about alien "snow"

Somewhere about 25 years ago or so, a friend of mine at the time told me about a book he read and I’d like to try to find a copy to read it.

I can’t recall the title or author, so I wonder if this brief description might jog someone’s memory and put me on the right track to finding it…

Near as I can remember, the story starts with “snow” falling during the summer. The adults pretty much think “Hummmmn” and go about their everyday mundane business. But the kids take a closer look and notice that the “snow” is really little crystal aliens that can clump together to “do things”.

That’s pretty much all I can remember.

If you have any idea about a book like this, please post. I’d be happy for any leads at all. Or even leads on where I might be able to get leads!

I read that book in 1979 or 1980 when I was living in England. I seem to recall it was set somewhere in the UK but I might be wrong. I’ve been digging around amazon with terms like “alien” and “crystal” to no avail. I’ll keep searching.
