Looking for a book previously a Reader's Digest Condensed Book - about racehorses?

I read a RD Condensed book years ago that was about a gypsy girl (Macha) who ended up breeding racehorses. It starts off with her father dying and her refusing to let them burn the wagon.

I do not remember the name of the book or anything, I thought it was called Gallic Gold, but no…

Anyone else remember this story?

Is that the one where the racehorse wins, but his urine test comes back positive for nicotine, and he’s disqualified?

dang! i’ve read that book. i seem to recall it was her Grandmother, not her father who died. they were members of the Rom, and actually she was appalled that that the family WASN’T going to burn the wagon and all of granny’s possessions like all good Roms should, but instead were sitting and discussing who got the china…

she wound up going to some school and befriending an equally-prickly blonde girl. the rest of the story, along with the title, unfortunately has fizzled from my memory.

this must have been back somewhere between '73 and '77, so i’ll cut myself a little slack.

remembering more now. big part of her story was the problems being “different” in her school. trying to, if not fit in exactly, at least not get harassed continually by all the other girls.

oh, and as i recall:

she winds up getting her own wagon in the end. breeding horses? don’t remember that so much.

“Gypsy gypsy joker
Grab a red-hot poker”

I don’t remember her going to school, but that may have been “condensed”.

She ended up (temporarily) married to a nobleman, who did not know she was Rom and was suitably scandalized when he found out.

She also had married another gypsy when younger “Coper Malloy”.

What the hell was that title?

Here’s Wikipedia’s list of titles for the series. Do any of the titles look familiar?

I’ll bet this is it:

(First hit on a Google search for “reader’s digest condensed books” gypsy)

You know what sucks? I DID a search, a few of them on Google and nothing came up.

That is it, thank you very much!
