Looking for a Christmas Song

A friend of mine is desperately seeking a song. This is from her:

Okay, I’ve exhausted every other avenue I can think of, so I’m turning to you guys as my last hope.

Years ago, my parents (who were of the WWII generation and are now both deceased) had a dubbed Christmas song collection which included a rendition of the song “Little Gray Donkey.” I’m not talking about “Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey” or “The Donkey Serenade,” or even “Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey.” This is a song that was recorded on several occasions by Johnny Cash, but Cash’s version is NOT the one I’m looking for.

The artist was a guy with a very mellow, pleasant voice (sounded something like Perry Como or Bing Crosby, but I can’t find it recorded anywhere by either of them.) I believe, though I’m not sure, that my parents’ original copy was part of a large multi-record Christmas collection by various artists…now, alas, long missing.

The song began with a spoken piece which went, “Clear back–way back to the end of the Seventh Day of Creation–the Lord was mighty tired after all his work of making the Sun, the Moon, the Stars and the Earth; and he had surely earned his seventh day of rest…”

Can anyone else remember this song, or can anyone suggest a web site or message board where I might be able to track down the information? About.com is no help, nor is Google, and neither are the P2P programs I own.

Hmm. I am barely remembering his singing voice. Does he fit her recollections?

He is mellow like Bing but with a country edge. Not a hard edge.

She is off to try and find a snippet of his version online somewhere. But she says she thinks that may be exactly what she’s looking for.
