Looking for a good read

Not sure what I’m in the mood for, but I tend to read mostly nonfiction. However, recently, I have been reading some horror and sci-fi stories. I’m looking for something different. I have been watching some western movies and the two that stand out are Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch. Is there anything out there that incorporate a reveng tale with the ending of the west out there? I haven’t found anything yet to satisfy the itch, so I thought I’d toss this idea out to the Teaming Millions.

Lonesome Dove is terrific. Enjoy. As an English major reading hundreds of books McMurtry is an astonishing writer.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.

Try The Incident at Twenty-Mile by Trevanian.

A little from left field, The Quest for Kim by Peter Hopkirk. If you ever read Rudyard Kipling’s Kim, then this may be up your alley. Set in the late 1800’s India, it is a coming of age story with the backdrop of the Great Game. That is, English in India/Pakistan, Russia to the north, and everyone trying to influence and/or carve yo central Asia and even China.

The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. The story of 2 hit men in the old west is an excellent read.

Shantaram - one of the best books I’ve read. Amazing true tale and you can feel it in the writing

I liked it too. The author was going for the “tone” of True Grit, I think, and he nailed it. Speaking of which, if you haven’t read True Grit, it’s an oldie but a goodie.

Thanks for the suggestions. They’ve been added to my list.

I’ve never read a novel, after seeing the movie (both versions), that was so close much alike. Almost like the book was written as a screenplay.

You’d like Lonesome Dove, which was a mini-series rather than a movie.

I have heard great things about the book below. Not sure if it is of interest to you though:

This is one of the most spectacular books I’ve ever read. Actually I listened to it. Almost 45,000 positive Amazon reviews. This is a period of history that I’m interested in. This book puts you there, right at Churchill’s elbow.

Thirded.

The movie was also very good. Very true to the book.
