Another tough music related question:
Sometime about 1984-6 there was an older white guy playing an electric violin on the Tonight Show. I believe he was using a vocoder that was patched through the violin giving his voice a very unusual sound. I asked a guy at a record store and he seems to think it was Staphane Grapelli. Any ideas?
Maybe it was Jean-Michel Jarre?

Could it have been Jean-Luc Ponty?
Probably not Stephane Grappelli (who just died not long ago). He was a jazz violinist but I don’t recall him ever using an electric violin. Jarre or Ponty (who played with Frank Zappa for awhile) would be my guess as well.
I would like to ammend my answer to Jean-Luc Ponty. He also made an appearance on the muppet show as well.
