Looking for a Lightweight Rain Jacket

I have been on the search for a lightweight rain jacket that I can wear during the summer while hiking/walking the dogs. We walk no matter what the weather is.

I have a rain jacket from LL Bean that is wonderful but it’s lined and too heavy for warm weather. The other rain jackets I’ve come across that aren’t lined are rubbery. In warm weather they are so hot that I can’t stand to wear them. It’s like wearing a sauna suit. I get so wet and sweaty inside of the jacket that I might as well not wear it and get wet from the rain. At least it would be cooler!

Does anyone know of a waterproof jacket that can be worn in warm weather…comfortably?

Something with gore-tex (or equivalent) and armpit zippers, like this https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5034-289/Hydrofoil-Jacket

“Frog Togs” are great, they have served me well on many a fishing trip…so light that you can crumble it up and put it in a pocket.

Check out the Marmot Precip. I’ve had one for three years and it is lightweight and has good ventilation. REI has them on sale now for $70, which is a pretty good deal.

I second both Frog Togs and the Precip.

LL Bean is what I was going to recommend. They have several that are not lined.

Another vote for Marmot Precip.

Thanks for the ideas! I’ll check them out.

The PreCip is probably the rain jacket I see most often on backpacking trails – likely because it is lightweight, effective, and is often available at a good sale price.

Here’s a link to a comparison of rain jackets on one of my favorite websites – their reviews are real, not just sales pitches:

The Best Rain Jackets for Men of 2017

Personally, I am not much for rain jackets. I strongly prefer using an umbrella or a poncho unless the wind is really howling and I really have to be out moving in it. My current jacket is the REI Rhyolite, chosen because it eVent rather than Gore-tex; eVent is more breathable – but no breathable fabric is more breathable than an umbrella.

Another vote for the Precip. I actually prefer a stiffer outer shell jacket, but the Precip is a great value for the money and does a good job. I usually buy one size larger than I think I need. Helps with ventilation and makes it a lot more flexible (including when I’m wearing a blazer or suit and need to cover up during unexpected rain).

Frogg Togs are fantastic but maybe not so great on the wear and tear strength. I love their light weight and breathability though.

Yes, I agree, an umbrella is the best option when it’s raining on a warm summer day, but not so handy when I’m out in the woods trying to wrangle 2 dogs!

Thanks for the recommendation - I’ll take a look at it.

I’m a big fan of ponchos, but may I suggest something I’m fairly certain no one else will - an Inverness raincape?

CMC fnord!
