I run outside even if it’s pouring. My dress for running in this type of weather is usually a layer or two under a light, packable, shell. These shells always say they are waterproof (or is it resistant?) and breathable, but I’ve never, ever been happy with them. Some wet through in minutes, others take longer but trap perspiration.
I know that Gore Activent was touted as being the best material for this type of thing, but it’s no longer available. Marmot offers MemBrain, but even they state it’s a second to Gore!
Any ideas? I like full zip, and something somewhat fitted. It doesn’t really need to be packable. I’ve seen Pearl Izumi cycling shells recommended for running, but I don’t know anything about them.
I have a marmot Preclip jacket. There is no insulation to it, just the shell. IIRC (It’s packed away for the winter right now) it does have pit-zips to aid with ventlation. During the summer it makes a great rain/wind shell. I’ve never had it soak through.
Population sample of one here, but I’m happy with it.
That looks like a good option for an all purpose raincoat, I’ll keep it in mind. But I’m guessing that it would be too much of a vapor barrier for a vigorous run. It’s probably similar to the rain-shirts or shells I’m using now.
I was thinking of something more like this: http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/20530/1/
It isn’t going to stay water tight for long in a downpour, but it is able to breath.
If you’re thinking along those lines, I’ve also purchased a REI Mistral jacket (I’ve probally got far more outdoor clothing than I’ll ever need…damn REI and their sales)
I haven’t tried it in a downpour, but it does shed a light/moderate rain as advertised. it is pretty light weight and I wouldn’t count on it for much insulation value.
you could also try this. I believe it is a touch heavier and a bit more water resistant, but have not worn it myself.
