Several from the musical version of The Color Purple apply, but especially the title number (later reprised) and the song I’m Here and in a less poetic & less subtle way the song Hell No! (video from Tonys).
Oh, yeah! How could I have forgotten Hell, No!?!
“Evolve” - Ani Difranco
I’m a Bitch sung by Meredith Brooks is a good one and one of my theme songs. Don’t let the title put you off. The chorus runs like this:
Um…45 posts and no mention of Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know?
Those aren’t empowerment songs. Those are “just settle and deal with it” songs.
Walk Away - Kelly Clarkson
Pumping beat, inspiring lyrics, and a music video of a bunch of people lip syncing and doing goofy dances to the song. ![]()
You know, there’s probably more from musical theatre we haven’t thought of yet: “Anything you can do I can do Better”; “Don’t Rain on my Parade”; “Wash That man right outta my hair” . I think there’s even a song in Sound of Music called “I have confidence in me”.
and despite the fact that many traditional folk songs are sexist, there’s also a subset of traditional ballads where the woman turns the tables on the man, or perhaps by dressing up as a man. I’ll dig around for some actual titles if no one else jumps in.
PS - Did anyone mention “Slow Hand” or “Sisters are doing it for themselves”?
I am beautiful. Christina Aguilerra.
Bachelor Girl - Permission to Shine
For a rockin’ get-up-in-the-morning-and-kick-total-ass song, it’s hard to beat “Ready to Go” by Republica.
Also there’s Naked Eye by Luscious Jackson.
