Anyone know where I can get some really decadent chocolates that are sugar free? I’ve scoped out Godiva, and they are winning the race so far, but I’d like to see a few other sites. I don’t want run-of-the-mill chocolate. I need world-class chocolatiers’ version of sugar free. I don’t do the fancy chocolates often, so I have no idea if Godiva is at the top of the heap or not.
But I know there are some serious chocolate fiends out there amongst you. Anyone? ANYONE? Thanks all.
Well, I don’t have any recommendations on high quality sugar-free chocolates for you, unfortunately. However … I would recommend that they only be eaten in small quantities - scarfing down mass quantities could possibly mean a tummy ache and digestive problems!! Seriously, take it from someone who knows!! Too much of that sugar replacement -will- give digestive problems.
The preceeding announcement brought to you by the makers of Immodium … LOL!!
Evidently this doesn’t seem to phase her, as she’s been inhaling these little treats like oxygen for some time now. I guess a serious chocoholic doesn’t give a shit!
This usually only applies to sugar alcohols. If they use artificial sweetners instead (or stevia which is a natural 0 cal sweetner) this should not be an issue.
The interesting thing about Godiva’s candies is that they’re NOT low-calorie. You still get fat…you just don’t skew your blood sugar readings. I saw another site that used fructose. I’m not sure a diabetic would be ok taking that.
Kanicbird, how do you know which ones are okay … er, which ones would cause the problem and which ones wouldn’t that is? Guess you have to read the package label pretty closely - but which ones are the sugar alcohols? I’d greatly appreciate this, because I’ve been thinking of getting some of the sugar-free ones as well. Thanks!
I’m not kanicbird, but if the ingredient ends in “-itol,” like mannitol or sorbitol, that’s generally a sugar alcohol. They aren’t all called something-itol, though. This site is about low-carb dieting, but has some information about sugar alcohols that you may find useful. It tells why the effects occur, for one thing, which I didn’t know.
Is there a Sam’s Club or Costco in Shangrala? At least one of those places (think it was Sam’s) has had a vendor in-store selling these really good low-carb chocolate bars. (Does low-carbohydrate equal safe for diabetics?) I’m afraid I can’t find a better resource on them but it was hard just to find these on the net.
To tell the truth, I’m not sure. I know she’s been getting hers from another big name (but not high end) company, and she just says “sugar free”. I don’t know how closely she reads the labels. I’ll also add that she’s not insulin-dependent. Diet and those booster pills are all she uses. I think she has more wiggle room than an insulin dependent diabetic would have. I’m sure if that’s wrong, someone here will correct me.
I was in Harry and David yesterday, and they were carring sugar free. Here’s some more information from their website.
Also, I don’t know where you are, buut there is a place in New Port Richey, FL called Grandma’s Candy Kitchen that carries a wonderful selection. They ship, too, as I recall.
My favorite No Sugar Added chonklit is in bar form, from Guylian of Belgium. Pretty widely available in the NE US anyway. There’s milk, dark, and I think maybe milk with almonds. Stomach friendly, mostly, for me.
Last teh holidayas I was given a sugar-free assortment from Li-Lac Chocolates of NYC. Those I had a little tummy trouble with, but they were delicious and classily presented.
Another followup question is whether you’re looking for (a) sugar-free chocolates that are still sweet from sugar alcohols, or (b) just plain sugar-free chocolates.
If the latter, Domori makes “Puro” chocolate that is 100% chocolate, Michel Cluizel makes a 99% chocolate, and some other companies also make similar stuff.
I don’t know specifically about sugar-free chocolates, but Godiva is more known for being widely available and ridiculously expensive than for being particularly world-class. They may be the best chocolate that’s mass-marketed, but they’re far from the best chocolate out there.
