I am a caregiver for my elderly father. I need a wireless, portable pager or alert button type of system. I want something really simple with maybe just one button my father can push that will make a loud ringing or buzzing sound on my end to wake me up to let me know he needs me. I dont want a life alert system that involves a third party. I just need an easy to use device where at a push of a button I know he needs me to go to him. He needs assistane with non emergency things like getting up to go to the bathroom, or if he wants a soda, and other similar things. But it cant be complicated at all since he gets confused. I dont need an an intercom because he may not always understand that he needs to hold down a button and talk. I need a button he can push where it just makes an alert sound like a ringing noise on my end. Ideally, I would like to be able to push a button and alert him as well to wake him up, etc. Does anyone know of a system like this I can buy. Everything I see is too complicated for him to use, or is for voice intercom only. Any help would be very muvh appre iated
Something like this? All either of you really have to do is hit the CALL button.
A doorbell pushbutton (or several, at various places in his room), wired to a loud bell or buzzer in your room should do it. And wireless ones are available if you don’t want to install the small doorbell wires. Any good hardware store should have what you need, for very little cost.
I think the doorbell thing would be perfect. There’s plenty of wireless ones around now. Then take the outside part and put in on a chain that he can wear around his neck. Sure, it’ll look stupid, but if it’s just for wearing around the house, I think it’ll be just fine.
Of course, this only works if you’re living in the house with him, you didn’t say.
IIRC, there are LifeAlert type systems that remove the third party and just dial numbers for you. You could get one of those and have it call your cell phone.
When my grandfather came home from surgery, we used something similar to this. It’s similar to a nurse-call button used in hospitals. It’s light, battery powered and simple to use. You can set it on a night stand, or have him wear it around his neck.
Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my inquiry! It’s refreshing to find people willing to go out of their way to help find a solution to a stranger’s problem. Joey and t-bonham…I went to a hardware store today and chose a doorbell/buzzer system that I think will work beautifully. Thanks for the recommendation. Again, thank you all for responding. It is very much appreciated!
I hate to say this, like this, but for a newcomer (I didn’t even notice you had just joined when I answered), you were breath of fresh air. Stick around, you’ll find people tripping over themselves to help.
Plus, if it helps based with your situation, we have a few doctors and nurses on board, including one that specializes in home health care. Some of them might be able to help with some minor medical questions you might have along the way (and a lot of others willing to toss in suggestions).
Thank You Joey. I think I will stick around. I did specifically join to ask my question so I am an extreme newbie! It’s difficult caring for an elderly parent who is becoming increasingly confused, so I might just have more opinions to solicit in the future. I look forward to returning the favor and helping other people with answers whenever I can. It’s been nice chatting with you Joey. Take care.
