Looking for music recs: bass-heavy, female vocals, alt-rock

This is going to sound a bit silly, but I really enjoyed a song that appeared on the most recent episode of the cartoon Adventure Time. Here’s “I’m Just Your Problem” on Youtube. I can’t stop listening to this and am wondering if anyone has ideas for music that sounds similar.

Most of the female-fronted bands I’m aware of are indie folk, pop, or shoegaze, which don’t have this wonderful bass-centric sound. I also love the Marceline character’s voice, and am looking for music with similar vocalists.

Does the Pixies’ Gigantic do anything for you?

Also Cannonball. Twice the Deal at no extra cost.

Maybe you will like the song “Oh Anna” by the Microphones?

Yes! Oh man, even at the oddest of hours, the SDMB delivers. I should have thought of the Pixies, but most of the tracks I’ve heard have Black Francis singing lead.

Sorry, my above post was meant as a response to sco3tt’s first reply.

The Slits, “Typical Girls”
The Raincoats, “Shouting Out Loud”
We’ve Got a Fuzzbox and We’re Gonna Use It, “XX Sex”

and of a somewhat funkier nature, The Tom Tom Club, “Wordy Rappinghood”

All oldies but goodies.

Eh, I always thought Frank was in touch with his own feminine side too. Go reacquaint yourself with the Pixies. You’ll be a better person for it.

Probably a bit heavier than you’re after (since that’s generally the reaction I get to any music I listen to) but I love a chance to talk about Bottom, an awesome stoner/doom metal band. Here’s Forever Gone and a live version of Got Meth. Both are loud and prolly NSFW.

Portishead?

How about PJ Harvey?

Prog Metal:

Lacuna Coil - Our Truth

Rock:

Skunk Anansie - The Skank Heads
Skunk Anansie - Charlie Big Potato

Indie Rock:

Bis - Fight The Power
Bis - Detour

Trance-ish:

Hooverphonic - 2Wicky
Hooverphonic - Barabas
Hooverphonic - Revolver

(Seriously, this ^ is a fantastic album. It’s one of my favorites in my collection of several thousand albums.)

Supreme Beings Of Leisure - Gold Digger
Supreme Beings Of Leisure - Last Girl On Earth

Indie Rock again:

Le Tigre - Deceptacon
Le Tigre - Well Well Well

The Muffs - Really Really Happy
The Muffs - Don’t Pick On Me

Although not at all typical for them, I thought maybe the OP (and others) would enjoy Attention Please by Boris (from their new album of the same name).

Another bunch from on of my favorite albums:

Opal - Rocket Machine
Opal - Magick Power
Opal - Happy Nightmare Baby

Not many people know about these next three bands, but they fucking rock:

Snowpony - Easy Way Down
Snowpony - Chocolate In The Sun

Snake River Conspiracy - Breed
Snake River Conspiracy - Somebody Hates You

Snakefarm - St. James (hands down the best version of this song I’ve ever heard)
Snakefarm - Rising Sun (another superb take on a classic song)

That should take the OP and anyone else a while to get thru; hope y’all enjoy some of it as much as I do.

The thread title is the most concise description of L7 that you can come up with. Here’s Pretend We’re Dead.

Missed the edit window:

These guys sound more than a little like early Drain STH, so anyone who likes them might want to check out Serve The Shame.

Indeed, pretty much the whole Riot Grrrrl catalog fits in the OP’s description. I listed The Muffs, but there’s also Babes In Toyland, Bikini Kill, 7 Year Bitch, Lunachicks, Huggy Bear, Sleater-Kinney, The Butchies, and a whole host of other bands from the 90’s and early 2000s that fit the bill.

ETA: Oh yeah, and don’t forget The Distillers and Brody’s new band Spinnerette!

The vocals in that song remind me of some of Poe’s songs. Enjoy A Rose is a Rose.

Nice, thanks. Just added this group to my must-listen list!

For more stoner metal with female vocals, I really like Jucifer. Their albums have different sounds, getting harder and sludgier as time goes on. The OP might like Jucifer’s album “I Name You Destroyer” best, as it seems to have that indie rock vibe most of the 5 albums I’m familiar with. Wish YT had a clip of their “Fight Song” which IMO best showcases her pretty voice, her screamy voice, etc. This song, Pontius of Palia, is okay, with pretty vocals, but no good descents into screaming. This song, Return of the Native, on the other hand, is virtually nothing but shrieking, sloppy drums, and sludgy guitar… and happens to be one of my favorites from them.

Brief hijack:

By coincidence I just picked that up in CD, at a mild premium. Annoying how so much of this stuff remains out of print ( paid through the nose for a decent copy of The Reivers’ Pop Beloved at the same time ). I wanted to get Early Recordings as well to replace a cassette, but the used CDs on Amazon were just stupid expensive.

Hope Sandoval has the prettier voice IMHO, but I always liked Opal’s slightly more kinetic/psychodelic approach to that of the more languid Mazzy Star.

I’m a bit fond of Splendora, myself. (Some other old fossils here might remember some of their other work. )

What? No mention ot Joan Jett with or without the Runaways or Suzi Quattro?
