This is going to sound a bit silly, but I really enjoyed a song that appeared on the most recent episode of the cartoon Adventure Time. Here’s “I’m Just Your Problem” on Youtube. I can’t stop listening to this and am wondering if anyone has ideas for music that sounds similar.
Most of the female-fronted bands I’m aware of are indie folk, pop, or shoegaze, which don’t have this wonderful bass-centric sound. I also love the Marceline character’s voice, and am looking for music with similar vocalists.
Yes! Oh man, even at the oddest of hours, the SDMB delivers. I should have thought of the Pixies, but most of the tracks I’ve heard have Black Francis singing lead.
Probably a bit heavier than you’re after (since that’s generally the reaction I get to any music I listen to) but I love a chance to talk about Bottom, an awesome stoner/doom metal band. Here’s Forever Gone and a live version of Got Meth. Both are loud and prolly NSFW.
Although not at all typical for them, I thought maybe the OP (and others) would enjoy Attention Please by Boris (from their new album of the same name).
Indeed, pretty much the whole Riot Grrrrl catalog fits in the OP’s description. I listed The Muffs, but there’s also Babes In Toyland, Bikini Kill, 7 Year Bitch, Lunachicks, Huggy Bear, Sleater-Kinney, The Butchies, and a whole host of other bands from the 90’s and early 2000s that fit the bill.
Nice, thanks. Just added this group to my must-listen list!
For more stoner metal with female vocals, I really like Jucifer. Their albums have different sounds, getting harder and sludgier as time goes on. The OP might like Jucifer’s album “I Name You Destroyer” best, as it seems to have that indie rock vibe most of the 5 albums I’m familiar with. Wish YT had a clip of their “Fight Song” which IMO best showcases her pretty voice, her screamy voice, etc. This song, Pontius of Palia, is okay, with pretty vocals, but no good descents into screaming. This song, Return of the Native, on the other hand, is virtually nothing but shrieking, sloppy drums, and sludgy guitar… and happens to be one of my favorites from them.
By coincidence I just picked that up in CD, at a mild premium. Annoying how so much of this stuff remains out of print ( paid through the nose for a decent copy of The Reivers’ Pop Beloved at the same time ). I wanted to get Early Recordings as well to replace a cassette, but the used CDs on Amazon were just stupid expensive.
Hope Sandoval has the prettier voice IMHO, but I always liked Opal’s slightly more kinetic/psychodelic approach to that of the more languid Mazzy Star.
