Looking for old software

I would really like to get an installable copy of the original Webshots program - the one that was offered before it went bankrupt and was taken over by the current owners. Does anyone have a copy of it? Or know where can I find it?

i dont know what webshots is, or how to recognize it, but try here

www.oldversion.com

if they dont have it, they do have a request page

      • What did it do exactly?,

Webshots is EVIL!!! It was a screensaver/desktop photo program that didn’t use any normal pictures, but kept the pics in some proprietary (encrypted?) format, bogged down the PC it was running on, and jammed up the network by frequently downloading new pics from the company that put it out. There was some concern that it included spyware, but I’ve heard no evidence of that.

At the job I had at the time, we found our network so overloaded by all the users with Webshots that we had to ban it.

Webshots probably is/was a disaster on a network, especially when used in screensaver mode (which I don’t, anyway), because it flicks through all the different images saved in the program, and most people who like/use it have lots and lots of images. I think the current version must use the same proprietary graphics format, because it can open the directories of the earlier version.

I, however, don’t happen to have a network. Just one lonely little PC, and while it ain’t the very latest thing, it ain’t too shabby, either. Only a practicing scientist or a gamer needs more, and I don’t even play Civ or SimCity anymore, much less do science.

What I dislike most about v.2 is the calendar on the desktop. It takes pixels right out of the image in order to give you a calendar. Now I concede that the calendar, etc. that used to be a little tiny applet in Windows is long gone, replaced by big fat programs that do things I have no need or desire for.

But I ramble. I just want to have my humongous catalog of nature and astronomical photos available to prettify my desktop. If I need a calendar, there’s one on the wall.

Aside to MessyPaint: http://www.oldversion.com seems not to be responding. Any idea whose portal houses it? I’ve found an alleged copy at http://www.download.com, but it’s a suspiciously small file. Hmmm. I think I Need More Information.

I don’t know if this will do exactly what you’re looking for, but it does have a similar feature, is free, and doesn’t hammer your processor too much. It’s Yahoo! Widgets AKA Konfabulator.

      • Just a note: I have been online a bit and LOTS of sites seem to “not be responding”, the internet traffic is a bit heavy tonight perhaps…

You can turn the calendar off in the current version. It’s under “Options” > “Wallpaper”. Just uncheck the box. Me, I LIKE the calendar feature.

 “To each his own,” said the old lady as she kissed the cow.

OTOH, if I can turn that off … … …

Hmmmmm… Maybe if I … :shakes head: Noo… But! … :mutter, mutter:

That’s a very nice try, and I appreciate it. However, I don’t want the images flashing. I’ve got probably more than 100 (how many more I don’t know; I haven’t had access to them for a while), :frowning: and I just want to see one at a time, until I get tired of it and want to change. I like looking at the same mountainside, or river, or shore, or ancient ruins, or galaxy, or whatever for several days, or sometimes even several weeks, if I happen to find it’s soothing me.

I obviously don’t care about the screensaver; I’ve got mine set to power off the monitor (just in case I forget to hit the power switch). And, so long as I’m not changing the image, the power drain happens only at startup. Which takes half of forever anyway. (Yes, I know Norton’s a powerhog, but it’s the powerhog I’m used to, and they do have the most dedicated tech support staff I’ve encountered.)

Well, you can control how frequently the widget changes the image, but I’m not sure if it has quite the control you’re looking for. And if you’re using Norton, I hope you’ve patched the latest problem discovered.

Thanks for the heads-up. I did manually run live update today, along with a forced download of the latest virus defs, and I noticed that there was something for NIS. That’s probably it, wouldn’t you think? :dubious:

Nary a clue. I don’t use Norton for anything, I just happened to spot that article, and when I saw that you used Norton, I figured you’d appreciate knowing about it.

Thanks!

This person has a 1.75MB download of Webshots. They say it’s an older version. The screenshot of the desktop looks nothing like the current version.

(I’ve downloaded from this site before. The program scanned clean, but standard safety measures apply.)

Maybe I jumped in a little too heavily there, with all the grief we had with WebShots. It’s probably OK on your machine. I still don’t like it, just because of the pictures being inaccessible to any other app. Good luck with it!
