Looking for religious music that isn't typical of religious music

Crap, I didn’t get my editing done in the required 5 minutes, and I forgot my closing quote on the url.

Mod— would you please? FYI the link doesn’t work in firefox anyway (it asked for a plugin). so… look for Amazing Love by the NewsBoys to hear the song.

E3

Black Sabbath - After Forever (“Open your eyes, then you’ll realise that God is the only way to love”)
Iron Maiden - Revelations (The first verse is actually an old hymn.)
Suicidal Tendencies - Give It Revolution (“We’ll bow to no one except the father and his Son.”
Toad The Wet Spocket - Fly From Heaven (Told from the POV of Jesus brother.)
Trouble - Psalm 9.
Tom Wait’s - Way Down In The Hole, Chocolate Jesus (To a point)

Shucks, your new stipulations removed One of Us by Joan Osbourne. How about songs with choirs that can be interpreted as spiritual. R Kelly’s I Believe I Can Fly and Bette Midler’s Wind Beneath My Wings come to mind. And that song by either Air Supply or latter day Chicago that gets sung by gospel choirs all the time. . . what is it? I can’t remember!

Now that’s gonna drive me crazy all day until I do remember.

A hearty second for Jars of Clay. Ditto Newsboys, whose songs are undeniably Christian but whose lyrics usually don’t drop names.

Reliant K is also fun, upbeat Pop with a Message ™, but their tunes start to blur into each other after a while.

A year or so ago a friend turned me on to some Christian artists that are writing songs that are much more universal concerning spirituality rather than strictly Christian and praising Jesus. {not that there’s anything wrong with that}

There’s a few that I really thought were amazing with great melodies and wonderful heartfelt thoughtful lyrics.

Ome artist is Nicole Nordeman Check out a bit of Every Season and Holy.

Another is Chris rice Check out Life means so much.

Teach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
Somehow our souls forgot
Life means so much

Everyday is a bank account
time is our currency
Nobody’s rich nobody’s poor
We get 24 hours each.

good stuff.

The Power of the Moment is also very good.
Questions for Heaven
He has a great song titled Hallelujahs

The Illumination Band. Putting Rumi’s words to Appalachian-inspired-American-folky-bluegrass-music.

An amazing and incredibly interesting compilation.

“You’re the Inspiration”?

Not long ago my husband and I heard Stryper’s “Honestly” on the radio (lyrics on this page, if you scroll down a little). Hubby is a lifelong metalhead, so he knew the song despite not really liking either Stryper or power ballads. But I knew the song from somewhere else: church! We used to sing it in praise and worship services at my Baptist high school and the church it was associated with. I don’t remember it being on the radio, and had never thought of it as a romantic song. I associate it with people raising their hands and maybe, if they were feeling a bit showy, speaking in tongues. I can even see it being used at weddings.

Nope, but you’ve jiggered my memory. It’s I Want To Know What Love Is.

That’s by Foreigner.

Heh, you’re putting some heavy restrictions on how you’re gonna use 'em. I mentioned these earlier, but you’re gonna have to re-arrange:

Kyrie (After reading the notes there, I now sort of hear them saying “Carry a laser…”)

Power Over Me is relatively dark, & I don’t know how it would work a capella, but give it a listen.

Most anything by Bruce Cockburn, who is a good male singer-songwriter, Canadian, devout Christian, and involved in progressive politics and environmental causes.
You might especially like “Can I go with you”.

U-2’s “One” is particularly inspiring.

And I think a male a capella group could do a nice adaptation of Joan Osbourne’s
“One of Us”

Kansas had a lot of music with religious / spiritual overtones. (IIRC, Kerry Livgren was/is an ordained minister.) “Dust In The Wind” is the most obvious example, but there are plenty of others.
