Looking for remote psychotherapist care in Ontario Canada?

The reason I’m specifying Ontario is because of OHIP coverage. My 24 year old nephew who lives in GTA/Durham region has been suffering from anxiety and depression for the last 3 years. He was a very good student but dropped out of university and has just been at home playing video games.

His mom has tried getting him to see doctors and psychologists, and he was prescribed meds but stopped taking them after a few days. He says that he doesn’t think talking to someone is helpful and that he didn’t get anything out of the 2 or 3 therapy sessions he attended.

He may be more willing to try again if it’s remote rather than his having to get up and go out of the house, but where would he find those resources? His mom is overwhelmed with other issues herself and his dad “doesn’t believe” in therapy, so I’m trying to help. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Have you taken a look at the resources on the provincial web site?

If there is nothing there, I can ask my father-in-law who is a psychiatrist. OHIP coverage for talk therapy is quite limited and waits for psychiatric services can be very long.

Thanks @FinsToTheLeft that link has some helpful resources including the online CBT site which he may be willing to look at. I hadn’t seen it before because to complicate matters I don’t live in Canada but visit there frequently.

No problem, I hope he can get some assistance. He can also contact Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. I did some IT work for them about 10 years ago, they are out his way in Whitby.
