Years ago I read a collection of science-fiction short stories and I’d love to find out the name of one of them.
From memory the overall story involves astronomers detecting something approaching earth (black hole, neutron star?) which they at first don’t think will cause too much damage.
As the story goes on strange things start happening (a star or moon is not blocked by Jupiter/Saturn for the expected amount of time) and the protagonist of the story figures out that the gravity from the approaching object is causing the space within or between atoms to contract, making everything in the solar sytem smaller.
IIRC it ends at large gathering with panic setting in as people get small enough that their eyes slowly stop recieving the visible wavelengths of light and everything goes dark and cold.
Any ideas?
