I’m kinda in a video game slump right now and need some new game suggestions.
More specifically I’m looking for a strategy game in the line of the Close Combat series. What I loved about Close Combat was that there was no resource managment. The strategy was solely in the combat and the movement of your units. Is there currently any games out that fit that kind of model?
While there’s a lot less emphasis on realism, World in Conflict might be a good choice. It has a requisition system where you request units based on the amount of requisition points you have. You are limited in how many units you can field. but you gain points over time whenever you lose a unit, so you can reinforce your forces relatively quickly. There’s also a tactical aid system where you can call in artillery and air strikes, as well as additional airborne assets, when you earn points by defeating enemies or capturing strategic locations. The single player campaign is fun and has a nice alternative history backstory. In multiplayer, you play a specific role, infantry, armor, air, or support, and fight with up to 16 other players.
Fly Pusher beat me to it. World in Conflict is a great game, for both the hard-core strategist to the laid back “hey let’s blow shit up” gamer (like me).
The only proviso I’d offer is make sure you have a DirectX-10 video card. I have a pretty decent 512mb Radeon card, but it’s only DirectX-9 and it crashes on me on anything other than bottom of the barrel graphics.
Yeah, forgot about that. You do need a pretty hefty card to run the game well. Anyway, Faces of War is a good choice too. I’ve only tried the demo, but the depth of the game seems staggering.
Close Combat…[sigh] Great, great game.
Try out Combat Mission. It’s a bit hard core on the realism part, but if you want to take it beyond Close Combat, Combat Mission might be something for you. Afrika Korps is the latest edition of the so called CMX1 version. Check Wiki (can’t do hyperlinks since that Tuesday.)
Another decent strategy game that’s not too heavy on the resource gathering is Axis and Allies. It takes off where the old board game left off.
There are some resource management type things going on, like planning which sort of troops you might need for a particular mission and building the right kind of buildings to sustain them … but like World in Conflict, there is a finite number of units you are allowed and those you lose you can re-fit or re-train.
There is heavy emphasis on strategic maneuvering and keeping supply lines open. It can be maddening for gamers not patient enough to not just want to blow shit up. I refer you to my first post … Hi. I suck at this game.
However, it is a pretty cool game for the strategic among us.
**X-com **It’s old but the better strategy games are.
Blood Bowl might also be what you’re looking for, it’s a football game, but it’s turn based and conceptually it’s more like a squad based wargame.
