Looking for suggestions on places to move to and live

This is rather odd to share on a message board, but it looks like my marriage has just fallen apart. I am 61 years old. I don’t have a great job or any reason to stay in the town where I currently live. I do have a college degree, plus some graduate work. In any case, I’m looking to move somewhere warm (e.g. Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, California, etc.). I can live simply and I don’t need a great job, but I will need a room, food and a job that will pay for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where one could move and live simply like this? I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Probably not what you had in mind, but since it’s been in the news recently… Topeka Kansas is paying people to move there.

Atlanta has a lot of nice jobs available. Housing is cheap. And, given your age, note that Georgia has some really great tax breaks for seniors.

OTOH, it is Georgia.

Look into Chiang Mai, Thailand. Large population of older American men who have gone through what you are going through right now. The city is not overly large, but big enough so that there is plenty to do night and day no matter what your interests are.

Warm weather year round and very inexpensive. You could probably live quite well on $1500. a month. Great quality, inexpensive health care. Plenty of work available as an English teacher.

You can qualify for a long term “retirement visa” by depositing about $25,000 in a Thai Bank or document that you have a monthly income of around $2200 per month.

I can’t testify on Florida, but the southwestern states range from low-and-warm to high-and-cool. Santa Fe, and California’s metro and coastal areas, can be pricey. Tucson area isn’t bad (I’ve a sister there); Phoenix area sucks IMHO but YMMV. If you have money saved and feel adventurous, a gringo can live like a king in Guatemala on US$2k per month. If you need to work, I hear Albuquerque has a job surplus. Good luck!
