Looking forward to Hitchcock

Opening in limited release in a couple of days. The casting is interesting: Helen Mirren following up The Last Station as another underappreciated wife of a genius. I’d have expected Bob Balaban to play his uncle, but that was not to be.

I’m dubious as to how Ed Gein will be portrayed. Growing up in Wisconsin, I’d met people who knew him (or at least claimed to have), and our image of him was of your typical goofy old bachelor coot, the likes of which populate the woods of Wisconsin as plentifully as squirrels. When they go off the deep end they usually just hang themselves in the barn, but in Ed’s case it was channeled into necrophilia.

I don’t see Robert Bloch in the list of characters, which is a shame since by all accounts he was quite the character himself; about whom it was said “he has the heart of a little boy…pickled and in a jar on his desk.”

I am looking forward to it.

And Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh! Let’s see if they’re as careful with not showing any nudity in the shower scenes as Hitchcock was.

I’m just leaving work, on my way to see it. I got a free pass when I went to the movies a couple of weeks ago. I’ll post later this evening with my impressions.

I’ll watch Hopkins do anything. Personally I find Hitchcock’s personal life dull and boring.
