It’s not Annie, sorry, but I think it’s beautiful, and I do love the original. This is a rarity because Hap’s never performed the song before or since. I was at this concert (my husband shot the video) and it surprised me so much it took me a few moments to realize what the song was! It immediately made sense though, because I knew that she’s a HUGE fan of LOTR, books and movies (and she was a book person before the movies came out). This was at a tiny little club in Philadelphia called the Tin Angel, in January 2005. That’s Bon Lozaga (Gong, Project Lo, Gongzilla) on electric guitar and Hansford Rowe (not the character actor, but the guy from Gongzilla) on bass.
Sorry about that Quiddity Glomfuster. Here’s a direct link to the wmv file, if that helps. It looks and sounds better than YouTube too. We shot the video (well, my husband did, while I was sitting there with my mouth agape) and it’s my account, so I’m not linking to someone else’s video.
I have about 10gb a day bandwidth, so you shouldn’t have any problems. I apologise in advance if the format trips you up, but I don’t have it in mov or mp4. I can get those formats, but not for a couple of weeks (my husband the techie is out of town on business).
Thank you VERY much for posting this. I’ve loved this cover since I first heard it (and, if I recall correctly, the first time was after seeing it mentioned here…). The quality of the video and audio is quite good, and Rhodes’ voice still gives me chills.
Thank you for saying so! I’m glad you liked it. I think I did post the mp3 of the song sometime after we got back from the concert, but we hadn’t had the technology until now to extract video to put on the web. It’s also on Google Video (which I think looks better than the YouTube version, at least at the smaller size) and should be downloadable from there. I haven’t tried downloading it from there myself.
That show was full of technical problems out of Happy’s control. The sound guy didn’t get there until a few minutes before the doors were to open, so they didn’t get a proper sound check, and the guitarist’s amp kept blowing up. He borrowed one from the venue and said it was his 3rd that day. Happy was sick and felt terrible, and had just had what she called “the week from hell” which included being stranded at the Cincinnatti airport for 3 days during a snowstorm (she made a joke about having to deal with “airport hair”), keeping her from rehearsal, and the floor radiant heat pipes in her upstate New York farmhouse freezing then bursting, which kept her now-husband Bob, a drummer, at home instead of in Philly playing. There’s more but I forget what all. Considering all that, it was an amazing night (she did two shows) and well worth the trip from Chicago. She hadn’t performed live for 2 years before that show, and hasn’t performed live since that night, so I’m glad we went.
Thanks for indulging my bit of fandom for the month. I’m besotted, what can I say?
If anyone’s interested, here is her MySpace page (it’s an authorized fan page, she’s not an Internet person except for e-mail).
I just saw this. Thanks for your interest! I know Happy, and I have her permission to share her music so I don’t see a problem. I keep a copy on a Rarities page I maintain so it’s been available for a couple of years and no one’s said anything.
Thank you for listening too! I keep a Song Samples page with several songs from each album (she has 10). A bit of spot-checking might tell you which one you’d like best. I usually recommend The Keep for those who are interested in her more acoustic side, and Many Worlds Are Born Tonight for those who are interested in her more electronic side. A good sampler to check out her early work is RhodeSongs, a sampler of her first 4 albums, along with some acoustic versions and non-album songs. Only one album, Many Worlds, is available on CD Baby or iTunes. She does sell some of the others at her own web site. Her CDs come up every now and then on ebay, and I don’t blame anyone for getting them, but if you buy them there and really like them, please consider buying something from her directly at some point in the future, because none of the ebay money goes to her, whereas all the money from her web site goes to her. She’s unsigned, so, you know, struggling artist and all that. I appreciate your interest no matter where you get them.
Thank you very much It’s very nice. I actually haven’t yet seen any of the LOTR films but will one of these days. Horrid of me, I know, but I did read every one of the books and loved them so that’s gotta count for something
