Lord of the Rings Mafia

Anyone else still playing this game? I’m travelling home tomorrow during the Dusk. If anyone else wants to say anything Today, now’s the time!

Well, I just woke up and prepared to dive into Mafia madness… only not much going on. I don’t really know how to check when someone last logged on, but I’m pretty sure that Stickler has not posted toDay.

FWIW, I am still suspicious of Diver. Like I said when I was considering him before, I think his posts were way too sure of there being one scum remaining (possible PIS). Meeko also got me thinking about scum risk taking. It’s possible that a scummy Diver used an obscure cover role like Gamling hoping to assert a defense of: “Gamling? Who is that? I had to wikipedia it. I could never make up a role like this! I am town, town, TOWN! Why would I make something like that up?” (P.S. You should read that in a funny voice because that’s what I was imagining when I was writing it.)

Additionally, this quote by Hoopy make a lot of sense:

The real problem is that, despite my suspicions of Diver, it looks like Stickler has flown the coop. Could be a frustrated townie taking his ball and going home. Could be frustrated scum giving up. No way to know when Stickler’s not talking. And if he’s not going to participate and give us anything to work with, I can’t see any reason to move my vote from yesterday.

**Vote Inner Stickler. **

I just got on the boards. I’ve got some stuff to do first, but I hope to get a further examination of you tonight at some point.

So looking back at Day 1, I get a slight townie lean from you given your interactions with now known scum.

Your interactions with Astral lean ever so slightly town, but it comes just from the interactions. It seems more of an honest case-making than a scum trying to stir something up. (After all, Astral was unknown scum at this point, so scum wouldn’t be protecting him.) You were certainly consistent on voting him, and the one-off at this point doesn’t indicate anything since plankton was going to swing. After all, both wanderers and I voted a one-off as well, for the same reason.

BTW, the interactions with now known scum refer to all the scum you interacted with, not just Astral.

Looking back at Days 2 and 3, not much really to add. Day 2 vote was a late jump on a bandwagon which indicates little one way or the other.

Day 3 I’ve already done a vote analysis on that.

Day 4: Late bandwagon vote again, on a scum (Natlaw).

Day 5: Early vote on a scum (Astral). Consistently pressed Astral on his defenses. Interactions consistent and town-like.

Day 6: Continually presses peeker. peeker had it coming. Nothing inconsistent in logic. Null tell. Though, his writing style is definitely consistent with what I’d expect from vanilla townie.

Day 7: Votes wanderers. Null tell.

Day 8: Votes snickers. At this point, cases are mostly people picking over posts with a fine-tooth comb because there’s not much else to go on.

Day 9: Voting stickler currently.

So yeah, I actually get a townie vibe from him on the whole. The only thing scummy I can really find is that his vote record is a paragon of playing it safe. But I’ve seen plenty of townies do the same. Personally, I view safe-voting as anti-town, but not egregiously so. It’s a very weak scum tell. So yeah, right now I’ll probably vote stickler by the end of the Day (I don’t work tomorrow, so I’ll be on), but I’m holding off for now until he chimes in.

Believe it or not, I don’t have computer access 24/7 and was offline all today.

(On another note, if you live near the Twin Cities in MN, and have a chance to see Novi Most’s The Oldest Story in the World, GO! It’s fantastic!

I like how everyone’s all before we rush into lynching stickler don’t forget blah blah blah vote stickler. Thanks for the love.

Oh we love you. But there’s like 12 hours left in the day. I don’t know what we are supposed to do.

Us: Stickler, we think you are scum.

You: [silence]

Us: Umm… Stickler? We’re all voting for you? How do you feel about that?

You: [silence]

Us: He makes a good point. Let’s all vote for someone else.

???

**Vote Count:

Stickler(3): Meeko, USCDiver, Doctorwho**

So I’ve given Diver a bit of grief for his safe voting, but someone left in the game is worse.

Doctor Who.

Oredigger was pretty much a non-player while he was around. I think about the only thing he really did of note was a snipe at Drain.

But Doctor Who has only two votes that show any sort of risk taking: Townie Special Ed on Day 3, who he votes in post 2064 (adding in a snipe at Drain) to tie with Scummy Astral.

And then yesterDay, he was the first one to vote Inner Stickler (and if he is the only remaining scum left, every vote is a safe vote so going out on a limb as the first voter on someone means dick).

The rest of his votes are on people who were already voted by many others. None of his cases in his votes really add anything new.

Day 4: He votes Natlaw (scum) as the 14th voter (post 2329). And his reasons, while sound, are nothing that haven’t been brought up by the other 13 voters. Additionally, he doesn’t even mention the most important point that Natlaw was counter-claimed by Nanook. In fact, he’s rather blase in comments about Nanook’s claim in that post. Never mind the fact that Nanook would have been crazy to counterclaim Natlaw if Nanook’s claim wasn’t on the level. This post reeks to me of someone trying to help without really adding anything.

Day 5: He votes the 7th vote on Astral, right behind the scum godfather who was number six. Once again, safe vote.

Day 6: 7th vote on peeker, who he’s been sniping at for most of the game without ever voting for until now.

Day 7: Self-described lame vote for OAOW (6th voter)

So yeah, while Diver’s vote record didn’t impress me, his overall posting history did. He stayed in the thick of things of all game and poked and prodded.

Doctor Who seems to have played safe all game, in both votes and general interactions. Most of his prods were on easy targets such as peeker or Meeko, or rehashes of other people’s arguments, or on Drain, who though he brings a bit of heat against, he never actually votes her. Scum will frequently do stuff like this with the godfather because if the godfather flips they can maybe get some cred, but more importantly, they keep the player of the godfather in the mind of people, increasing the chances of the gf being investigated, which is good for scum.

In light of this, I’m going to…

vote: Doctor Who.

Stickler is likely to swing toDay unless everyone follows me, but I want to get this out here because if Stickler flips town, we are three-handed tomorrow. Either meeko or I will be dead come morning and if I’m alive, the Doctor is who I’m likely voting tomorrow. If it’s Meeko alive, I want Meeko to see this. Because I don’t think Diver is scum, and if he is, I applaud his play.

Oooh, I hope Stickler flips scum, my friend, otherwise when this game ends you are going to eat this sentence for a long time. Applaud his play? Jeez.

Well, here’s hoping Stickler is scum. And if he is, and it’s game end and victory for Town, I want a big fat apology. If not, and we go into the three-player game, well, we’ll just see what we happens. Cause you are right, assuming one scum (that aint Stickler) this game is going to come down to either you or Meeko.

Stickler(3): Meeko, USCDiver, Doctorwho

Doctorwho(1): Hoopy

24 minutes left in the Day.**

And I only just noticed that the announcement of Day-end time was inconsistent: It said both “in 48 hours” (which would be now) and “at noon Eastern” (an hour from now).

We’ll wait for Noon, then. I don’t want to be unfair.

Well, if you and stickler are both town, can you put up a better case against USC Diver to convince Meeko or I that he’s a better choice to vote than you rather than some meaningless snipe such as above?

“What hope do we have now? We have no clear direction and we have even lost dear Frodo?” said several individuals.

Someone replied, “Perhaps. If there is no hope, then we must proceed without any hope of success. If there is hope at all, it is naught but a fool’s hope. A hope that resists logic, sorrow, and reason.”

InnerStickler said little on the topic. So little, in fact, that eyes of suspicion began to fall upon him. Eyes like daggers.

A quiet noise was heard. It sounded like whispers….desperate whispers. It was coming from InnerStickler’s direction.

“It won’t work, you fool. We have at last found you, creeping amongst us,” said one individual.

They raised their daggers and swords and struck down InnerStickler.

InnerStickler was Wormtongue, a Servant of Darkness. He could use his words to control others and stop them from taking any action during the Night.

A sweet breeze blew toward the West and the Alliance of Light could immediately tell that something had changed.

“What is this? What does it mean?” inquired many.

As the air grew sweeter still, the darkness around Mordor began to clear.

As the breeze continued to blow, it gradually began to swirl and take a shape, until a clear image was before them. Before them now was Gandalf, but not Gandalf as they had seen him before. He was changed, not just externally, but from within. He now stood before them wearing white robes and carrying a white staff. His eyes were bright and his face was cheerful.

“It means,” he said, “that the evil of Mordor has at last been destroyed. While it cost us dearly, far greater the cost would have been if we had not wiped them out. Sauron and his minions have been destroyed and we will not see the like of them in Middle-earth again.”

The Alliance of Light was strong, and would rebuild to become as strong as ever. Sauron and the Servants of Darkness are gone forever.

Congratulations, Alliance of Light! You win!

I’m willing to answer any questions about the game.

A couple of quick things. This, for me, was actually a pretty complicated game and a lot happened over the last month.

It was a blast! Great game by everyone! I appreciate the full participation and active discussion! Thanks, everyone!

Please don’t make any judgments, for good or bad, until you fully understand the setup. In the end, this game swung towards Town slightly, but a lot of other little things went against the scum team that hurt them.

Surprisingly, early on I thought the Scum were going to win. The handshake conversation at the beginning of the game provided the scum(who DID have vanilla backups) with a nice list of power roles. This is how they picked off the power roles early.

A few things noteworthy:

  1. Natlaw’s poor fake claim that killed him and eventually Astral. I think if this had not happened, scum had over 50% chance of winning(at that point, I mean).

  2. MHaye/Frodo. Frodo had 5 Days to destroy the Ring. If he did this(by surviving), Drainbead(Sauron) died. However, MHaye could wear the Ring 2x to hide.

a. I messed this up I think. The ring was supposed to make any powers except kills miss MHaye. Instead, it was full protection.
b. It never came up, though. No one tried to kill Mhaye.
c. Drain would have continued to exist if she had died without the
Ring’s destruction. She would have only been active at Night, though.

  1. Cucuy disappeared, which was frustrating to me. He was Gollum, our third party SK. He had to submit a kill after the Ring was destroyed, but didn’t and died. Annoying. Cucuy contacted me every Night, though, insisting that he was still in the game.

  2. In every Mahaloth game, assume that handshaking won’t work. If it did work, I’d fix the game even after it started if it was possible.

5The parchment was a blank note sent from Chronos to RedSkeezix. It was one of Aragorn’s powers that Eowyn inherited. Chronos left the note blank after using it and then not wanting to. Remember, Eowyn did not know the use of the items.

  1. There are many more idiosyncracies out there for this game, so make sure you learn about it if you are curious. I have unlocked the spoiler board, the scum borad, and the setup board if you would like to see them.

Register for approval, then you can look at these boards freely

I will say this Maha, not that you can speak freely on it, given Blockey, but we need to do something about Assumptions / Potatoes in general.

I agree it was poor but it was kinda nullfied by Nanook’s investigation (even a super claim from me wouldn’t have matched Gandalf).
I did write the Denethor PM** Plankton** used and that also got ripped apart by town though :(.

Congratulations to Town!
