I don’t agree with what Pleo did. If I were in his shoes I never would have made that sort of half assed pseudo claim. But what’s done is done, and I’ve had that discussion with him before. Now that it’s made? I can’t say whether he should come clean or not. What if he’s a Scotman type? Definately shouldn’t full claim. What if he’s a Detective? Ditto, since the longer the scum leave him alive the more information he gathers. There’s just too many possible roles for me to say what the correct move is now that the half claim is out there.

thank you. because this kind of makes sense. the only part that i would disagree with would be the dick part. because you can bet your ass that with a dead doc if he is really a town power role his ass is in the scum spotlight toNight. so if he is a dick he should spill it before he goes to the durn grey havens. and if he is still alive tomorrow then holy monkey.

mod question: if a Night kill is attempted on a scotsman type would that information be shared with the group as a whole, with just the individuals involved or no one?

I did a vote analysis on the Ed/Suburban thing here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=12826673&postcount=1296 . It shows the definitely suspicious voting that Chip did, and that was before Guiri corrected me on the fact that Ed’s vote total was actually one higher since Mahaloth had missed Guiri’s vote on him (Guiri’s post is here: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=12826962&postcount=1307 ), and I started after the point the vote was missed. So Chip even looks more suspicious in that light.

Upon sleeping on it, I think I agree with this. It’s not just the timing of the vote that I find particularly suspicious, but looking back at the WoW, how he starts off saying ed is probably a Townie who made a mistake, and then switches gears once SP looks like he’s taking off…combine that with the lack of actual analysis and case-making in most of his posts and I’m comfortable voting for him.

I’m not seeing the connection between that and this. That was entirely due to a Scum screwing up, and catching Scum when they make mistakes is an integral part of this game. If a Scum screws up and only one person catches it, there’s absolutely no reason for that person not to share all of the information they got from it. Here, though (it’s implied), it’s the moderator who made the mistake, and in such a case, the moderator can and should do whatever is needed to mitigate the mistake as much as possible (such as swearing a player to secrecy). But yeah, my main point was that, if ed was sworn to secrecy, why was he allowed to say that he distrusted Glorfindel?

One more point on that, incidentally: Even if ed did, somehow, end up with the information that Glorfindel should not be trusted, and even if, for some reason, he were allowed to share that information, why did he? Now that he’s said it, there’s no real chance that anyone is going to false-claim Glorfindel. If they were previously planning to do so, they’ll just switch to some other obscure LotR character instead. On the other hand, if ed had kept his mouth shut, there’d be a chance that someone would try it, and he’d be able to pull a gotcha on them.

Highly unlikely that someone would claim that name. Highly unlikely that anyone would believe me. Relatively unlikely that anyone would believe me when I flipped Vanilla.

For special ed: Yesterday you said a couple of times that you were suspicious of people claiming there are different worded vanilla PMs (I think I repeated it at one point). But are you actually suspicious or were just trying to plant the idea that Telcontar wasn’t a power role because you were suspicious of him for believing there were different PMs?
If the first, why be suspicious of the people who said ‘must be different PM, no power roles found here, move along’ instead of the ones who went ‘failed to handshake, lets ignore that scum might fail and vote else where’.
Everyone was keeping the fact that power role were possibly outed under the lid, so why cast suspicion on the first group?

Because I’m quite confident that there is but 1 Vanilla Role PM. I really had no idea on the power/role or not-Town issue.

if he is a dick why would he not claim? i mean scum would certainly kind of deduce that, so why not share while he is still alive. i mean certainly they can play with the fire and let him live and get more results while tainting them with something along the lines of he can’t be town or else he would be dead type of line. but once he gets toasted then all the results would then become real. that seems dangerous as heck. and if i were scum, with a dead doc, then he is toast toNight. so it seems like he ought to at least share what he got last Night, if in fact he is even a dick, probably more so if he is a town rb.

Update on me:

My post count has been way down yesterday and today, and I feel that needs an explanation. Today was the first day of my master of fine arts program. I’m working 20 hours a week for my school on top of classes to pay for tuition, and I also work a part-time job. These past few days have been a bit crazy, and I haven’t been able to devote as much time to the game.

However! I have been following along, although I haven’t been able to reread things as closely as I’d like. Things will settle down for me, and tomorrow I’ll be back in the game full-time.

I’d like to chime in on the Chipacabra bandwagon right now. He certainly seems very scummy to me, but I’d like to seriously review the case against him, and check out his posts on my own. I’ve been burned before by agreeing to a convincing argument before!

Wait, to be clear here, a question for the folks who are familiar with Pleonast’s playstyle: Does he always claim to have a power role, whether he is or not, or does he always claim to have one when he actually does, and stays silent otherwise?

And peeker, you just got done saying that if Pleonast has information, he should share it. Now, you’re saying that you have some information (some reason folks should not vote for ed). The same arguments for Pleo sharing apply to you, and even if Mahaloth swore ed to secrecy, he didn’t swear you. So spill: Why shouldn’t we vote for ed?

Peeker, the reason I say a Detective Pleo shouldn’t claim is BECAUSE the doc died last night. The scum can’t know that’s what he is. Let’s say they try to NK him. If he’s a detective, that’s awesome for them. Dead detective, no results for us. But what if he isn’t a Detective? What if he’s a Scotman instead? Now if they try and NK him, it’s terrible for them. Failed NK, confirmed Town, and outted scum. (Assuming standard Scotsman role, with mod confirmation and knowledge of who tried to kill you.) Right now, with the half claim out there, the scum have nearly as much WIFOM(assuming Pleo is Town) as we as Town do. They can’t know WHAT he is, just like we can’t. Some roles they would want to NK ASAP. Some they would want to stay the hell away from. But if he full claims, that wine goes away and they know exactly what they should do to handle him. However, we really don’t know any more than we did before. He could still, for all Town knows, be lying. Full claiming therefore is a positive for Scum and very little, if any, positive for Town.

Unfortuantely, it’s not an always thing. He’s done this, or similar, twice before that I know of. Once was in Dr. Horrible, where he claimed that he was recruitable or something, I forget the details. In reality, he wasn’t, and was in fact a super Scotsman of sorts, that could not be NK’d or lynched but was never confirmed as Town. The claim was, as I remember it, mainly based on a misreading of his PM, and had nothing to do with his actual role.

There was another game, also on Idle’s site, that I’m forgetting the name of. He claimed exactly as he did in this one, the sort of half claim. He ended up being lynched for it, and refused to full claim before said lynch. He was a Town power role.

And I realize I started a train of though in my response to Peeker and forgot to finish it. If the doc was still alive and hidden, it would make more sense for him to full claim if he was a Detective, since he could reasonably expect protection. With the Doc dead however, if he claims Detective, he’s dead the next Night, or at least will eat a RB til he dies.

that’s why i asked about masons, for goodness sakes. let’s be very clear folks. no obfuscation. i have information that i was told not to share. ed does as well it seems. i am boromir and if he is faramir then i see this as a kind of self confirming mason thing without being so direct. holy crud look at my video posts. look at the brothers comments.

what i can’t tell is if the durn mods are playing around or actually have deisgned a mechanism for “masons” to kind of feel each other out. which just smells like story to me.
