Lord of the Rings marathon on Encore

I’ve never watched all of any of the trilogy. Since last evening, I’ve filled in some gaps, and (in bits and pieces) expect to fill in some more gaps through tomorrow. Then it’s up to me to assemble them all into a coherent story.

Ned Bean was Boromir? No wonder everyone was thrilled about him playing another noble but flawed character in Game of Thrones. Good portrayal.

I tuned into the final movie this morning at just the right time. Shelob was just right. Then I had to go to the grocery store, and got back in time to notice that Saruman and Wormtoungue did not get offed in the Shire. That was not right.

It’s Sean Bean and Ned Stark, easy to conflate the two.

I hadn’t read the books before watching the movies, so I was fine with the way Grima and Saruman were dispatched, and Elves at Helm’s Deep? Way cool. The Elves didn’t have enough screen time, so I was glad Jackson gave them some more. God, they were pretty to look at.

I’ve watched the extended versions two or three times, and each time I notice something I missed. I also notice stuff that doesn’t seem quite right, like problems with perspective, but that’s okay. This last time, I watched with Sam as the main character rather than Frodo. That was the same week I saw Sean Astin on a My Name Is Earl repeat, where he played a jerky appliance salesman. Made me appreciate his portrayal of Sam even more.

I still don’t like Bilbo going all Large Marge at Frodo in Rivendell, or Galadriel’s freakout at the pool.

They’re showing ROTK Extended-in HD!-right now! I don’t think any network has ever shown the Extended versions before (tho I could be wrong).

nm…

:smack: I said, “Is that Ned?” and then that’s what I posted.

I’ve seen almost all of it now, except that sometime today I need to try to catch what happened after the Ent found Merry and Pippin. It’s kind of weird watching them in such a disjointed, skipping around fashion, but I’m enjoying it.

Love the Mouth of Sauron scene! How could they leave out such a cool looking character from the theatrical release?

Occasionally (not often), someone asks me if getting/watching the extended versions is worth it. I show them a youtube clip of that scene, and rest my case.

I’ve seen them all before, but I just bought the Extended Editions on blu-ray. So far I’ve watched FOTR and I may spin up TTT this afternoon. I think TTT and ROTK benefit the most from the Extended Editions.

I’d even say that TTT Extended is the best movie in the series.

I am having a blast watching them , and playing LOTRO at the same time. There is a bit of a disconnect, I keep thinking 'Wait, if you are going to Rivendell through Trollshaws, it is a big detour to go past Bilbo’s trolls on the way, they are way north of the road through …" :smack:

Only watching sporadically, but I do appreciate a commercial-free channel doing the extended versions. These movies are so good, that anything the director wants to add back in is fine with me.

Except that it includes Gimli referring to an orc’s spinal column, which just clangs off my ear and was deservedly on the cutting room floor. But it does include Aragorn’s reaction to Eowyn’s cooking, which was awesome.

Do you mean the line:

Gimli: “He was twitching because he’s got my axe embedded in his nervous system!”

?

On the movies I’m a naysayer, but usually don’t bother trying to make someone unlike something they enjoy. But… I just watched the scene on YouTube and whatthehell?
The noble Aragorn hacks the head off a negotiator without warning? No wonder the scene was deleted. And the Mouth’s gums were dramatically recessed, but other than that… so what?

My memory of the book isn’t real clear, but I think the Mouth character was a debased, nearly de-humanized ranger, which to me sounds more interesting than some bad teeth. I don’t mind directors changing books, but I don’t like the changes to be for the worse.
And should a mithril vest be that light? mutter. grumble.

Yeah, that’s the one. It’s even worse than I remembered – I doubt that dwarves had a complex understanding of orcish anatomy, beyond “if you cut off their head, they fall over”.

My favorite extended scene is in TTT: Merry and Pippin discovering the store of food and tobacco (excuse me, pipeweed) in the guards’ room on the edge of Isengard.

Second favorite extended scene, which is in ROTK: The riverbank/black ships scene when Legolas shoots an arrow past the bosun’s ear. Gimli nudges his bow to queer his aim, and Peter Jackson takes the arrow in his chest.

Missing the marathon, but I’ve seen 'em all several times.

Aragorn killing the Mouth of Sauron was uncool. They were parleying - the Mouth was an ambassador, of sorts. Even when an ambassador taunts you and shows you the personal effects of your late (or so you think) friend, you don’t just lop off his head if you’re The Good Guy.

On the other hand, I esp. enjoyed Merry and Pippin admitting to eating lots o’ lembas after Legolas is no longer in earshot.

Mithril isn’t super light? How light should it be?

Heh. I’m not going to research all the references to the properties of Mithril in the Tolkien books right now, but in my humble and marginally informed opinion Mithral should at least seem metallic.

How about as light as magnesium? I believe Frodo took off his mithril garment on the last leg of the journey because it was weighing him down a bit.
