Los Angeles Dopers, I need a 24 hour Diner

Looking for a Diner seemed like cafe society, but if this is more IMHO feel free to move it.

So I am working on a new screen play with my writing partner. The problem is, because of our day jobs we have to write at night, and we just lost our office space. We have been going to Sitton’s (in north hollywood, by my house) because they will let us sit there for 6 or 7 hours on the patio while we smoke and write and drink way too much coffee. But its starting to get mighty cold and sitton’s doesn’t have out door heaters. There has to be a place in LA where we can go to write for hours on end into the wee hours. Starbucks etc are out as they are too crowded, as are places like Fred’s 62 and Swingers. If the place has a heated patio (so we can smoke) that is a plus, but isn’t totally necessary. Anyone know of any place like this in the LA area?

Try NORMS. They work too hard to take time off to put in the apostrophe. It’s good, greasy eatin’.

I came in to second NORMS, but I was beat to it. The only place I can think of that’s open late at night and in many locations is Denny’s.

One Christmas I drove round looking for a place to have Christmas dinner. I tried a couple of steak houses, but they closed before I got there. I tried some other places, but they were also closed. I wound up at Norm’s in Santa Monica. It was the only place I could find that was open.

It was after that that I started my tradition of cooking roast prime rib and Yorkshire pudding for Christmas dinner (and then eating it for a week!).

The Original Pantry is a downtown insitution. Breakfast is especially fantastic. From what I understand is that it is not only open 24 hours it is open 365/6 days a year and has not closed it’s doors since it opened.

You may want to try Canter’s, which is on Fairfax just a few blocks north of The Grove. I’m not sure how busy they get, but they haven’t been super busy the times I’ve gone there (this was mostly when I was working night shift, though, and keeping quite odd hours). Keep in mind that they have a live band there Friday nights (maybe Saturdays too?), so you may as well rule out Fridays.

Also, I believe the Jerry’s Famous Deli in Westwood is used to UCLA students coming in and studying for hours at a time, so I don’t think they’ll mind you guys hanging around. Of course, I’ve never been to any of these places for much longer than the time it takes me to eat a leisurely meal so YMMV.

There’s a place called The Kettle in Manhattan Beach, CA. The sign says it’s open all night. I don’t know what “all night” means. Maybe not 24 hours I assume? It’s on the main avenue with all the shops on the corner.

There’s a big diner on Sunset right there in Hollywood, not too far east of the Tower Records (or where it used to be) … What the hell is the name of it?

There’s also Cafe 50’s on, I think, Santa Monica just west of the 405, but I don’t recall if they have outdoor seating.

Then there’s these

I hope that’s 365/7 and not some weird 6-day calendare we’re using in L.A.

The Pantry was closed briefly a few years back when it flunked a health inspection. A local TV station did an expose on health code violations in local restaurants and the County went and re-inspected just about everyone.

The Original Pantry claims that (except for its health closure) that it’s never been closed and never been without a customer since it opened in 1924.

It would not be a place to stay all night since it’s fairly busy and they would want you to leave. The tables are small and all the mayo from the coleslaw will get over every thing you have.

There’s the Spotlight on Sunset near Echo Park Blvd.

I think he’s covering leap years with the /6.

I have only been there 4 times, but Mel’s Diner sounds like it would fit your bill. It is near Studio City.

Great Pancakes. I think it was in a few movies as a bonus.

Jim

They close at 3am, I hope that’s not too early. I thought they were 24 hours. Sorry. :smack:

Duke’s? Next to the Whiskey?

Might be.

Good thing you keep tabs on stuff like that out there in Nebraska.

Or rather the Britespot… as the place is actually called.

They did move about 60 years ago without missing a single meal.
