Los Angeles UFO Attack

What’s the Straight Dope on the alleged UFO attack on Los Angeles on September 13th, 1942?

Here are some sites with info on the alleged attack:

The UFOs vaporised the entire metropolitan area that night and subsequently rebuilt it using their super-fast alien technology. They then repopulated it not with human abductees (as you’d expect) but with the shapeshifting lizard people from Proxima Centauri.

How else do you explain Robert Goulet?

Well, it’s not entirely in the realm of crackpot. It was in nationwide papers, and is also mentioned in reputable books. Here’s a more credible site on it:

Sounds pretty clear to me. Some anti-aircraft gunners had itchy trigger fingers and fired on what they thought might be enemy aircraft. That they never figured out exactly what they were shooting at is no reason to invoke little green men.

As Kamandi said, the submarine attack had made everyone nervous. Better to let off a few rounds than to be accused of negligence / cowardice.

In your linked reports, note the quality of the testimony.

A ‘young, beautiful’ woman is quoted as an authority.
Why do these attributes matter?
Then come the usual unnamed sources. Difficult to check on them, isn’t it?

The armed forces deny there was anything there.
This is taken as evidence that not only have aliens sorted the problems of interplanetary travel, but that there is a Government conspiracy to cover it up.

One wonders who gave the order to ‘cover up’ the first-ever UFO incident. How did they know at that point that there were aliens to ‘cover up’?

Also, imagine the scene in the middle of the war. A Japanese submarine has attacked an American city. Naturally rumours are rife. Then the top brass give instructions to lie about what just flew overhead.
However, no-one speaks out, even in the next 60 years. Presumably they were worried about their pension, or something…
