Losing a fish = farmed?

I see teenagers on YouTube fishing harbors and such and when they hook a fish but lose it before they land it, one of them will often say, “You farmed that one.”

I’m thinking it’s something like you’re sending the fish back to the fish farm?

Anyone here actually familiar with this expression?
