Losing data on Xbox GTA 4

I play xbox, and while playing GTA 4 I sometimes seem to lose data after shutting off the console. I understand that one must complete a mission to have their game saved; well, actually, I can’t understand the game-saving process at all. To wit:

  • Sometimes when you complete a mission, the screen just has a white whirling circle on it and says it’s saving your game; and sometimes when you complete a mission, the screen cuts to a screen that asks permission to save your game to the hard drive (I don’t even understand this part, either), and you say yeah and it does. Is there a difference?

  • Even if you just saved your game to the hard drive (see above), sometimes I still lost data (in other words, turn on the game next time and a mission or two has been undone).

  • Supposedly you can save your game just by going back to your apartment and walking up to the bed and saving the game, but this seems to be bullcrap because it doesn’t really hold the next time you start the game.

I’m so frustrated I may just go steal a bus. Not in the video game.

Can someone please help me out? And btw I didn’t realize there was a gaming forum on this board, should’ve put it there, my bad.

Reported for a move.

Is the system clock on your Xbox set correctly? If not, it may keep reverting back to Nov. 22, 2005 at 7 a.m. (or whatever the default is), in which case it’ll get confused over which is the most recent saved game. At least, I’ve had that problem in the past whenever there’s a power outage at our house (which resets the system clock).

GTA IV has an autosave feature that can be turned off (or at least it does on the PS3). I’d recommend making sure it is turned on - that’s how I normally worked things when I was playing through single player. The above kind of makes it sound like its doing this inconsistently for some reason…

This I haven’t seen. What I have seen is that if I have an auto save, and a manual save, sometimes the game would start up with the auto save even if the manual save was later. In which case I just had to go into the save menu and load up the right save.
