Lost a traffic ticket

and it has my summons date on it which IIRC is next week at the county courthouse. The court can’t find a record of it but they said that the sherrif’s department can file it up to the day of the summons. I obviously don’t want to notify the Sheriff if by some miracle they didn’t file it. So what should I do? And yes, I have torn the whole house apart so some solution other than that.

Check online. In my county they show up online a few days after the infraction and the court date will be there as well.

Google for “[your city/county] circuit court access”. Some variation of that will probably get you to your jurisdiction’s court records and it should be there. Otherwise, like they said, just call. It’s not like if you don’t have one they can write a traffic ticket for you.

How big a problem would it be if you didn’t turn up, vs how big a problem would it be if you did turn up, but could demonstrate willingness to cooperate via emails to the sherriff (even if you mostly do it via phonecall, also email them to have it on record) to fulfill your civic duty?

To Joey P. Did that yesterday. Clerk had no record of anything having to do with me. No ticket, no case. She’s the one that told me it may not get on the docket there until the day of which sounded really weird for a few reasons.

SciFiSam: Besides a warrant for my arrest? Once I missed a court date in Colorado Springs for a 10mph over speeding ticket and the cops were at my house the next day to arrest me. Then they went to my work and told the principal I was going to be arrested like dragged out in handcuffs. Luckily I had just gotten paid that day so I stayed one step ahead of them and paid my ticket on my lunch break so yes I am paranoid.

Would it do any good to go to traffic court next Monday (I have that day off and IIRC the summons is for that date or the next 2) and explain the situation? Maybe have him dismiss it even though AFAHK it doesn’t exist just so it doesn’t come back to haunt me later when they find it? Beside I want to fight it since I didn’t actually break the law. The cop had a very bad angle and I assume he cited me because “everyone does a california stop there”

I think you have to suck it up and notify the sheriff. They probably filed it, and at worst you’ll just have to go defend yourself like you originally planned.

Finally made it to the docket. Whew. No being dragged away in handcuffs until after Thanksgiving.

If they do arrest you the day after Thanksgiving, be sure you have your 8 by 10 color glossy photographs.
