Lost Utah Kid Was an Idiot

“compelte” should read “complete” in my posting above.

As a resident of Salt Lake, I’m sure that I was exposed to much more media coverage on this than you were, although I’m not claiming that this makes me an expert. However, your statement that

is totally false. I know a LOT of Mormons in Utah, and not one of them “knew it all along.” Yes. there was some speculation in the early days after the kidnapping that perhaps she had run off with a boyfriend, but this was just one of the many theories put forth trying to figure out what happened.

Once she was found and the details emerged, I did not see ANY statements from ANYONE even remotely involved with the case that she had gone willingly. In fact all of the evidence uncovered pointed to exactly the opposite conclusion.

It may surprise you to learn that young Mormon girls are not raised to believe that their purpose in life is to be one of the wives of some lecherous old man. Obviously someone has sold you a pack of lies about what the Mormons do and do not believe, and you would do well to check out some of this misinformation before you pass it on as fact.

That’s unlikely. He is obviously completely and utterly insane.

Too bad.

I’m still convinced Elizabeth Smart wanted to run off with Grizzly Adams and didn’t want to come home again.

Ah, so you really don’t give a hoot about facts.

Let’s be glad this kid didn’t go through anything more than lack of food and water and being lost. Let’s be glad he’s reunited with his family. Let’s be glad he didn’t suffer anything remotely approaching the fate Ms. Smart did.

Got any proof of these jerkish claims?

He is still going through the court system.

Is that right now? I am pretty sure that I know quite a few more Utah Mormons than you do and not even one of them felt that way. Moron.

It’s interesting that every time Mitchell is brought into the courtroom he immediately disrupts the proceedings by breaking into song and preaching. It’s obvious that he’s either insane or trying to convince people he’s insane. I’m leaning toward the latter opinion, but again as Trunk has so thoughtfully pointed out, I’m not an expert on this case.

:frowning: Thanks for adding that. My heart did drop in my chest when I read that first part.

:::looks at the baby, crosses fingers and prays a lot:::

Oh I agree with you 100 percent and as much as it kills me to say (I can’t stand the guy) I have to agree with Ed Smart when he says Mitchell is crazy like a fox.

Maybe we should ask Trunk, he seems to be the only expert around this here joint.

I pit all you assholes that dogpile on an eleven year old kid. Whatever the specific reason he was ill prepared for his little adventure. Give him a fucking break and don’t beat him up just because A: it’s easy and B: he didn’t do what you or I may have done at eleven.

You’re right. I didn’t mean to make a big point of him maybe being a tad slow or something. So what if he is? He made it through a tough situation, good for him.

Did you read the thread? Most of us are, if anything, dogpiling on the parents for not properly preparing him (or his scout hosts) with the knowledge he needed, and it seems that they’ve done this out of a blindness to possible developmental or mental problems - problems that are not being diagnosed here, but have been stated in local media.

“The kid was an idiot” was only the starting point before the “socially immature” bit was revealed. “Why did the parents let this [idiot] kid go camping without preparing him with a logical set of rules or instruct the adults that he needed extra close supervision if he needed it?” is where we’ve been at since post 7.

Than again, if you want to pit Trunk, go right ahead. He is being an asshole.

But what about poor little Johnies damaged self esteem because he wasn’t able to defeat his grizzly in single combat. Now he will feel left out lacking his “Slayer of Grizzlies” Merit Badge. Without that he will NEVER get to be an eagle scout. Maybe we could give him a smaller bear and let him try again.

Fires? Are you mad? Those attract child molestors!

Trunk, I’m an atheist bachelor who fucks anything in a dress, drinks like a fish, and supports gay rights.

IOW, I’m as far from Mormon as can be. So I hope this establishes that I’m not an apologist.

I believe that the LDS church has at times acted dishonestly. I would even allow that they have acted in ways contrary to justice (e.g., the Mark Hoffman case). Big organizations often succomb to corruption.

But you are way out of line when you assert (even allowing for hyperbole) that “every… Mormon in Utah” knew Elizabeth Smart’s situation. To think that her parents consented to letting that nutcase have their way with their daughter – c’mon man, you’re too smart to believe that.

Her parents didn’t CONSENT. Not at all. They just had suspicions that their daughter ran away under her own free will.

None of it adds up. I jsut don’t believe that throughout the entire time she was with Beardy that she was completely under a spell.

A guy wielding a knife just happened to come into her bedroom but she was so paralyzed with fear, she just walked out with him without a struggle.

Her little sister was so paralyzed with fear that she didn’t say anything about it for 8 hours, not that Elizabeth told her to keep her mouth shut.

Elizabeth was so paralyzed with fear that she didn’t even move when her captor was in jail for 3 days.

She was so paralyzed with fear that sitting in a police station, she still wouldn’t admit who she was.

Her dad doesn’t want her on the stand because there’s no way for a Mormon to save face here. She either had to lie under oath on the bible that she was kidnapped, or she has to tell the world that she was too stupid to realize that a guy she thought was a prophet turned out to be a nut job.

So were these rescuers – who the kid kept hiding from – calling his name? They should have been. I can kind of understand that he might have been afraid to show himself to strangers and not realized that they might have been looking for him. (I still don’t understand how he was in the middle of a group and somehow wandered off or got so far behind that he didn’t know where to go and couldn’t continue following the trail he had been on and didn’t shout for help or stay put.)

If they were calling his name and he still hid from them, then he must have some kind of developmental syndrome. If they weren’t calling out his name, then the idiot rescuers need to be told how to “rescue.” It’s just luck that they happened to see him right out in the open - they should have been calling him in case he was lying injured somewhere.

P.S. I don’t buy most of the Elizabeth Smart story either and think she and her parents are either lying about parts of it, or she’s the dumbest most naive 14-year-old on the planet.
