LOTR Witch King Question

I can’t remember; were the Nazgul horses in the movie Friesians?

Why that’s a rather unusual statement nowadays, isn’t it? What do you use him for?

Sorry for the hijack but I’m dying of curiosity.

As with a lot of what Tolkien wrote a thing’s nature drove what it could do. The elven cloaks weren’t magical, they simply were made so that others couldn’t see the wearer. Shadowfax, was therefore simply the greatest of his kind of horse which in turn were long lived, strong and wise.

And for the love of god is there nothing that wikipedia doesn’t try to list? Horses of Middle-earth

Y’all are totally cracking me up. “Pal o’ Meanos” indeed.

ETF- I am fairly certain that they were, though I don’t have anything in front of me that could confirm that. The one we’re getting is a Tennessee Walker, but he looks very much like the Friesian in your link. I wonder if he’ll “clean up” into more of the Walker look once we get him here and give him a bath and proper clipping.

Rusalka, I am the head of an equine program at a residential facility for behaviorally/emotionally disordered kids. We use the horses both as recreation (basic riding) and in animal-assisted therapy sessions. I can’t wait to get this guy- he’s completely different from the other horses we have, and I’m very curious to see how the kids respond to him.

You know, if I didn’t have such an aversion to naming horses in the diminutive (anything ending in “y” or “ie”) I would so name this guy Binky and see who catches on. So far just our vet has caught Brego… he may get Binky as well.

But Binky is not a diminutive! Only, isn’t a Binky supposed to be white? Non-Binky doesn’t sound like an appropiate name

Maybe some kind Doper could translate “Binky” into Noldoran or Sindarin? It would certainly be in the Tolkienish tradition…

Well, “binky” is a term for a pacifier. A pacifier is a peacemaker of sorts. The Quenya name that means “Peace Maker” is “Sértan” (from Sérë + tan).

Alternatively, in light of the role you hope he’ll play, Sindarin offers “Nestor” (“Healer”).

HAH! Then, when he pins his ears, I can tell him “Ears, Nestor!”

Even though the horse is black, may I suggest “Babieca”?

No, you may not. Mostly because then I think technically he’d belong to you.

How about just “Angmar?”

If anyone asks why, you can tell them that the horse badly dented your ang.

Doubtful. I didn’t notice any feathers on those closeups of their feet.

Yeh, that’s a very good point. Probably not, then, unless the feathers had been trimmed for the movie (so the nails sticking out of the bloody hooves would show better?).

Hey, “Angmar” sounds good, very good, for the new guy. Pictures?

I assumed they trimmed them- I was going more by body/head (and that funky mane) than anything else. But then, I have a registered Appaloosa that looks NOTHING like an Appaloosa, and just recently retired a horse that I (and our vet, and the folks we retired him to) was utterly convinced was some bizarre TB/Arabian hybrid but that the owners insisted absolutely COULD NOT BE, so I really shouldn’t be allowed to judge.

Okay… Angmar and Nestor are the current front-runners, but the Big Boss has veto power, and she was expressing a desire to name this one. I may be able to sway her toward Nestor.

Pics when he arrives at the beginning of April… he was unvaccinated and our policy requires them, so his owner just got his shots and we’re waiting to see if he has any kind of reaction to them before bringing him on-campus.

How about John Barleycorn?

Looks like a mishmash of horses were used for the wraiths: Movie Horses NZ

One of them was named “Bob”.

Are you a woman? Because if so, I want to marry you, if you’re a guy I am now your loyal retainer.

I have some notes on Sindarin roots and could coin some names for you, if you like. Otherwise, I’d vote for “Angmar.” Short, simple, and to the point… plus a good test to see if others are familiar with the Professor’s works.

Why not use the black speech of Mordor? Bagronk or Bûbhosh are lovely names! (Dung-pile and Pig-guts).
